When I was younger (around mor1,) my mom used to have a reward system to control my excessive gaming. It is hard to control what kids want to do, especially if it's the main interest. Instead, my mom used that fact to turn into a benefit and motivation for me to study.
My mom said "If you study/do homework for 1 hour, I'd let you play for 2 hours." Obviously, she didn't block me from playing vdo games, but in order to get to play, I'd have to study, and it is a reasonable tradeoff.
Another reward is something like... "If you get over a <good gpa> for this semester, I'll buy you a <gift>" and it helped motivating me as well. You should make sure the reward fits his interest, and doesn't hurt you too much financially.
That being said, your son is much older than me at the time, and he also doesn't live with you. Just a thought to implement something similar krub.
