Thaksin unsuccessful in bid to meet interim Thai PM
Thailand's former Prime Minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, has tried unsuccessfully to meet the man who replaced him in a bid to negotiate his return to his home country.
Mr Thaksin has been living in exile in London since his government was ousted in a coup on September 19.
This week he travelled to China in the hopes of meeting with Thailand's interim Prime Minister, General Surayud Chulanont.
Last week there was a controversial meeting between Pochaman Shinawatra, the former Prime Minister's wife, and one of King Bhumipol's most senior advisers.
Mr Thaksin was not able to talk to Gen Suruayud and he is unlikely to be welcomed back to Thailand in the near future because of fears that he will disrupt the nation.
The generals who staged the military takeover justified their actions by saying Mr Thaksin had divided the country and had overseen a corrupt government.
But to date, graft investigations into the former Prime Minister have failed to find evidence of corruption.
