US urges swift Thai return to democracy Fri Nov 17, 9:37 AM ET
HANOI (AFP) - The United States urged Thailand to return to democracy, as US President George W. Bush prepared to attend a meeting with army-installed Thai Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont.
ADVERTISEMENT "What we have said is we expect and encourage Thailand to return to democracy as soon as possible. That's been the message from day one; that hasn't changed," White House spokesman Tony Snow told reporters.
His comments came a day before Bush was to meet with seven of the 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) that are also members of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation ( APEC) forum holding a summit here.
The seven are Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
Surayud, installed after a September 19 coup, arrived in Hanoi on Friday, hoping to convince APEC leaders that it is business as usual in the kingdom despite the ouster of Thaksin Shinawatra.
Following the putsch, the military installed marital law, slapped a ban on public gatherings and imposed media restrictions, prompting harsh criticism from countries including the United States and Japan, both key Thai allies.
Thai Foreign Minister Nitya Pibulsonggram told AFP that Surayud would use his trip to Vietnam to explain the reasons behind the coup and outline a timeframe for lifting martial law.
"People are concerned about what is happening in Thailand and I, for one, would look upon their concern as coming from friends who have high hopes and aspirations for us," said Nitya, former ambassador to the United States.
