Permanent Secretary for Security Chang King-yiu on Monday confirmed that a Hong Kong resident had died during a traffic accident in Thailand.
The accident occurred early on Monday when the victim, a Hong Kong man, was travelling to Phuket airport. Their trip had been arranged by an airline.

“The accident occurred when a Hong Kong couple – with four other people – had been travelling from Bangkok to Phuket airport,” Ms Chang told reporters.

“The man had been hoping to catch a flight back to Hong Kong. The accident happened at midnight,” she added. Further details about the dead man were not yet available.

The permanent security said the man’s wife had been injured and was in a stable condition.

She said the Hong Kong government would liaise with Thai authorities in order to send two extra charter flights to bring Hong Kong people home.

“We are asking for more landing rights and we hope today we can arrange two extra charter flights by Cathay Pacific and Hong Kong Express to Pattaya to bring back about 560 people to Hong Kong. They will have to pay a concessionary price for the tickets,” she said.

Ms Chang said two flights from Cathay Pacific Airways (SEHK: 0293) and Orient Thai Airlines would also fly two charter flights to Pattaya. They could bring back about 580 tourists.

“The two flights would depart at 5pm and 9.45pm at Utapao Airport,” she said.

Deputy-Secretary for Security Ngai Wing-chit estimated there were at least 400 Hong Kong residents still stranded in Bangkok.

He said that as of Monday afternoon, the Immigration Department had received 1,367 inquiries and 778 requests for assistance relating to the situation in Thailand.

In other developments, more than 300 Hong Kong stranded tourists returned to Hong Kong on Monday morning.

They were being stranded after anti-government protests which closed Bangkok’s international airport last week. They arrived on a Dragonair flight from Phuket on Monday morning.

A larger plane is scheduled to fly back more people back to Hong Kong on Monday evening, local media reported.

Hundreds of other stranded Hongkongers are expected to be flown home in the next two days. They will return on special flights operated by several airlines, including Cathay Pacific Airways.

Cathay corporate communications manager Dane Cheng said the airline would arrange more charter flights to Pattaya’s military airport.

“The airline is sending a 385-seat capacity Boeing 777-300 from Hong Kong to Utapao Airport, south of Bangkok, to bring travellers stranded in Thailand back to Hong Kong on Monday and Tuesday,” he said.
