Dear fellow British citizens,
This letter is to inform you that the majority of the Thai people do not approve of Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva as the Prime Minister of Thailand since not only that his path to the premiership is against the normal democratic process but he himself is clearly a key force in destroying democracy in Thailand. We list some of his political behaviors in recent past:
In March 2006, Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva, as the leader of Democrat Party and the Opposition party at the time, together with his political allies boycotted the April 2nd general election. He was the mainstay in campaigning for the Thai people to cast a "no-vote" ballot, and pressuring smaller political parties not to contest in the election in an attempt to have it nullified by the Election Commission opening up a path for the military to stage a coup.
In April 2006, he was in the forefront in requesting for a King-appointed Prime Minister to replace a Prime Minister elected by the People. This was clearly an attempt to overthrow an elected governement which violated the principle of democracy and political tradition of Thailand.
In September 2006, following the military coup, Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva told the press that he did not agree with the military coup, but he also did not condemn it. Instead, he made an excuse for it, saying that "eventhough it was not democratic in principle, in essence it was democratic."
In May 2007, the Constitutional Court which was set up by the military junta had ordered with partialty a dissolution of Thai Rak Thai party on ground that one executive member violated election laws and banned 111 executive members of the TRT from politics for 5 years. Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva and the Democrat Party openly welcomed with joy the decision by the Constitutional Court to rid of their political enemy without taking into consideration the ligitimacy of this judicial process under which the military has control of.
In October 2007, Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva, the Democrat Party, and their political allies urged the Thai people to give approval vote to the 2007 Constitution drafted by a military-appointed assembly that essentially destroyed the principle of democracy by which the sovereignty of the country was given to its people. Specifically, the coup makers were given the right to select more than half of the members of the Upper House which in turn had power to overthrow an elected government. Furthermore, the last article of the new constitution, or article 309, was the most bizarre. It contradicts to the universally accepted principle of laws. It provides a blanket amnesty to coup makers for any committed acts in the past, present and future.
During May to November 2008, Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva, as the leader of Democrat party allowed Mr. Somkiat Pongpaiboon, a democrat MP and several other party members to join as leaders of a partially armed right-wing political group namely People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) to create political unrest in an attempt to overthrow an elected government of Mr. Samak Sundaravej and Mr. Somchai Wongsawat by seizing a public TV station, surrounding the Parliament, occupying the government house for 3 months, and seizing the two international airports. Mr. Abhisit not only allowed his party members to publicly commit illegal acts, he also brought members of his party to visit and give moral support to protesters inside the government house and urged the previous government not to drive them out of the government house area.
In October 2008, Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva and all of his party MPs concertedly refused to attend a parliamentary meeting which was scheduled for Mr Somchai's government policy announcement but at the same time allowing his party MPs and some of his party members to join PAD to surround and occupy the parliament in order to disrupt the government policy announcment.
In November 2008, Mr. Kasit Bhirom, as a member of the Democrat Party and a shadow minister, joined the PAD to block and seize the Suvarnabhumi airport while Mr. Abhisit did nothing to stop him implying Mr. Abhisit's support of such international terrorist-like act which practically saw more than 300,000 tourists being held as hostages.
In December 2008, Democrat Party led by Mr. Suthep Tuaksuban had conspired with some leaders of the military to pressure certain faction within the People's Power Party's and other parties to defect from the government coalition and support Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva as the Prime Minister instead without regard to the fact that Mr. Abhisit and his party did not receive mandate from the people. This is considered to be a shameless move and a power corruption amid vast resentment among majority of the Thai people.
Since Mr. Abhisit is the Prime Minister and had appointed Mr. Kasit Bhirom as the foreign Minister, it implies that Mr. Abhisit approves of Mr. Kasit's action of blocking and seizing the airport and regards it as an acceptable and ligitimate act.
With these facts, the majority of the Thai people do not approve Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva as the Prime Minister who came to power through democratic means and he himself is the key force in destroying democratic system of Thailand.
Dear British friends, we would like to make further observations. Mr. Quinton Quayle, the British Embassador to Thailand, has close relation with General Prem Tinasulanonda, head of the Privy Council, who is thought to be behind the 2006 military coup and directing the judicial process closely. We do not know whether Mr. Quinton Quayle had acted on behalf of the British governement or not, but the fact that, within his authority, he cancelled Mr. Thaksin UK visa and acted as an intermediary to have the British government invite Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva for an official visit to the United Kingdom as the Prime Minister of Thailand can be regarded as an approval by the British government to support a person who conspired with the military and a network of anarchists to destroy democracy and deny a person who was overthrown by such illigitimate power.
We are concerned that Mr. Quinton Quayle, the British Embassador to Thailand, may be performing his duty with hidden agenda and we are not certain that his diplomatic behaviors reflect true democratic intentions of the British people.
Therefore, we bring these truths to you as preliminary information for your consideration.
The Thai people have long had close and friendly relationship with the British people. But if some of the Thai people choose to respond to the British government by boycotting the British goods in Thailand and react negatively to the British business network in Thailand, please understand that it is not because we target the British people as a whole, but we would like to express our dissatisfaction over the diplomatic gesture of the British government to which Mr. Quinton Quayle acts as its representative.
With sincere regard, The People of Thailand
