In October 2007, Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva, the Democrat Party, and their political allies urged the Thai people to give approval vote to the 2007 Constitution drafted by a military-appointed assembly that essentially destroyed the principle of democracy by which the sovereignty of the country was given to its people. Specifically, the coup makers were given the right to select more than half of the members of the Upper House which in turn had power to overthrow an elected government. Furthermore, the last article of the new constitution, or article 309, was the most bizarre. It contradicts to the universally accepted principle of laws. It provides a blanket amnesty to coup makers for any committed acts in the past, present and future.
During May to November 2008, Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva, as the leader of Democrat party allowed Mr. Somkiat Pongpaiboon, a democrat MP and several other party members to join as leaders of a partially armed right-wing political group namely People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) to create political unrest in an attempt to overthrow an elected government of Mr. Samak Sundaravej and Mr. Somchai Wongsawat by seizing a public TV station, surrounding the Parliament, occupying the government house for 3 months, and seizing the two international airports. Mr. Abhisit not only allowed his party members to publicly commit illegal acts, he also brought members of his party to visit and give moral support to protesters inside the government house and urged the previous government not to drive them out of the government house area.
