After meeting with Prime Minister Naoto Kan, DPJ Vice President Hajime Ishii told reporters he asked the premier to allow Thaksin's entry into Japan.

Ishii said Thaksin, who has been convicted of corruption, is hoping to visit Japan between Aug. 22 to 28.

"It is said that his entry is difficult. But Thailand is an important country and I told the premier to make a political decision," Ishii said.

Thaksin served as Thai prime minister between 2001 and 2006, before being ousted in a bloodless military coup. He now lives in exile in Dubai to escape a two-year prison sentence.

Tokyo - Thailand's fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra wants to visit Japan in late August, a senior Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) lawmaker said Wednesday.

Hajime Ishii, DPJ vice president, met Prime Minister Naoto Kan and asked him to allow Thaksin's entry into Japan, the lawmaker told reporters.

Thaksin, who served as Thai premier from 2001 to 2006 before he was toppled in a September 2006 coup, has been living in self exile since 2008 to avoid a two-year sentence on an abuse-of-power conviction. He is hoping to visit Japan between August 22 and 28, Ishii said.

Japanese law does not allow the entry of a person who has been found guilty and given a jail term of more than one year.

'It is said that his entry is difficult. But Thailand is an important country and I told the premier to make a political decision,' Ishii was quoted by Kyodo News as saying.

Thaksin's younger sister, Yingluck, is slated to become the next prime minister and the first woman to hold the government's top job.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano told a news conference the government has yet to receive such a request from Thaksin.

'If a specific request is made, we will then consider it in a responsible manner,' the government spokesman said.

Thaksin's Japanese supporters said that, if the former Thai premier is allowed to come, he hopes to hold a news conference, speak at a lecture and visit Miyagi prefecture, which was devastated by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, Kyodo reported.
