The U.S. administration gave Israel a "green light" to hit Hamas. Bush, in his press conference last week on the eve of his meeting with Sharon, mentioned the "Hamas and Hezbollah terror organizations" in connection with the Americans' new lethal enemy in Iraq, Moqtada al-Sadr. The following day Bush wrote in his letter to Sharon that Israel had a right to self-defense against terrorism, "including taking action against terror groups."
And, as if that wasn't enough, the Maariv daily leaked a story of a White House official who told an Israeli colleague after the liquidation of Yassin: "What about Rantisi?" Not much is needed to get the message. There is no doubt Israel drew support from the lukewarm international response to Yassin's assassination, which convinced it that taking out his predecessor would pass with relative quiet. After all, Yassin was a "religious leader," a status Rantisi lacked.
