A Honda service manager told us that under normal 'light-duty' use, CVT automatics have been shown to last just as long as conventional automatic transmissions. But they've learned that in vehicles subjected to heavy stop-and-go driving - such as delivery vehicles - the transmissions will fail as early as 100,000 miles.
And when a CVT fails, the cost is much higher than that for a conventional automatic. So far, replacements can only be bought through the manufacturer's parts network. And given the rare nature of these transmissions, you're best not having a private shop - which has likely never seen a CVT up close before - try to install a new one. So what's the price tag? Including the twelve to fifteen hours of labor required for removal/installation, count on $4500 to $6000, and closer to $10,000 if you have an Audi! Let's hope that in a few years - by the time today's CVT-equipped vehicles reach high mileage - there will be more aftermarket/rebuilt alternatives or actual shops that will repair them for a reasonable price!
