^ ^ 2008 Mini Cooper Clubman
By Jim McCraw On Sale: First Quarter 2008 Expected Pricing: About $20,000
A new wagon version of the Mini Cooper, called the Clubman, goes on sale in the U.S. next spring.
The Clubman takes its name from the station wagon model offered on the original Mini from 1960 through 1982.
BMW, the parent company of Mini Cooper, showed off its latest Clubman concept at this fall's 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show. The station wagon concept got its first public showing at the Frankfurt Auto Show two years ago as the Mini Traveller concept.
The Mini Cooper Clubman can be configured with four or five seats.
Compared with the standard Mini Cooper, the production Clubman will feature a wheelbase stretched 3.1 inches and a body stretched 9.5 inches; the rear overhang is increased by 3.2 inches to get the proportions and storage space right for a wagon.
The narrow rear-access door to the second row of seats is only on the right-hand or curbside, and it is hinged at the rear, opening toward the front. So, like on an extended-cab pickup, there's no exterior handle and you can't open the cargo door without opening the front door first.
At the rear of the car are two center-opening doors, instead of a tailgate. With the necessary steel body panels surrounding the two rear windows, the design creates a large blind spot in the rearview mirror. One payoff is easy access to the cargo, another is that cargo capacity increases over the standard Mini Cooper to 9.1 cubic feet behind the back seats, or a total of 32.6 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down.
The Cooper S version of the Clubman wagon will have the direct-injection, twin-scroll turbocharged 1.6-liter inline four-cylinder, producing 175 horsepower at 5500 rpm and 177 pound-feet of torque from 1600 rpm. The standard version uses a naturally aspirated engine producing 120 horsepower and 118 pound-feet of torque. Both versions come with a six-speed manual gearbox and electric power steering.
The base version will use 15-inch tires and wheels, and the Cooper S will have 16-inch rolling stock and run-flat tires to save weight and space. A start-stop engine feature that works off the clutch pedal was mentioned, but the U.S. may not get start-stop in the transition from the English Mini factory to the U.S. market.
An unusual technical feature on the Clubman has the front wheels now carrying an electrical power regeneration braking system, like those used on gas-electric hybrids, which generates electrical power to charge the battery whenever the brakes are applied. The alternator is disengaged during acceleration to use all of the tiny engine's available horsepower.
