Fog lamps are a cheap and easy addition to your car's lighting system. Not only do they look cool but they increase the safety and drivability of the car. The next time you get caught in a heavy bank of fog, with your headlights reflecting back in your face, you'll wish you had fog lamps on which to rely.
How Fog Lamps Work When driving in fog, rain and snow, the illumination from your headlights is actually reflected back at your face. This actually decreases your vision. For this reason, it is usually recommended that you use your low-beams when driving in these conditions in order to keep the reflective light lower and farther away from the eye level of the driver.
Fog lamps are usually mounted low in an effort to shine under the fog. In addition, fog lamps are designed to create a wider range of illumination when compared to regular driving lamps. Although fog lamps will help you see better in conditions of bad weather, they will never provide perfect illumination. If the weather is bad enough to require the use of fog lamps, it is bad enough to require the driver to slow down.
If your car has fog lamps, be sure to familiarize yourself with the on/off switch. Many drivers turn these lamps on and then simply forget to turn them off. They later wind up driving around with their fog lamps turned on even during good weather. This can be hazardous to your fellow motorists when the fog lamps shine in their faces or mirrors. So be careful out there.
