Angry, Incredulous, Stunned, Disgusted… I'm sure you'll be flooded with letters regarding the farce that was the United States 'Grand Prix', so I'll keep things simple: the sport has shot itself in the foot big-time. Max has ultimately shown the FIA to be far more disinterested in safety, and far more interested in Ferrari's well-being that it (and he) would admit. 9 teams out of 10, including 2 on Bridgestone tyres want to put a chicane in, and the FIA and their on-track safety man say 'no' because their pet pals Ferrari say 'no'. The whole Ferrari team should be dragged before the FIA courts and charged with bringing the sport into disrepute for causing this farce. The Michelin teams have been happy to take penalties post-race for this cock-up in favour of putting on a show for the public, but Ferrari in their pathetic self-interest have refused that and that's a disgusting attitude and if it's not bringing the sport into disrepute, nothing is.
Of course, that won't happen. The Michelin teams will lose out, Michelin will (rightly) get hammered, and Max will continue merrily along with his destruction of the sport I used to love.
The fact is, the race could have been rescued and taken place properly for the fans, as it's supposed to, but Ferrari opposed it. Michelin caused the situation, but Ferrari could have rescued it. As usual they've put their interests ahead of the sport. The GPWC can't come soon enough, because Formula 1 is a dead 'sport'. Tony Fordham
…2005 U.S. GP: a complete joke!! One of the biggest and most influential markets in motorsports and F1 looks like a bush-league go-kart series. The FIA seems to fail to realize that it is in the entertainment business. To lose an entire race over ANY disagreement/problem regardless of its origin is ridiculous. Why could a compromise not be reached? F1's reputation has been severely damaged, not only in North America, but worldwide. No wonder I don't make an effort to watch like I used to... …I have just witnessed the biggest farce in the history of F1. The FIA, Bernie Ecclestone and Ferrari need to be reprimanded for not using some common sense to allow a motor race to take place today. This is a sad day for F1 and its fans, especially those poor people who travelled all the way to Indianapolis !!!!! Tony Geary
...This has got to be the last US GP.
I don't mind if they want to pull out before the race but to do what they just did. That is not a protest. That was the biggest insult to the FANS!!! The fans in Indy are being cheated off their money and the fans at home are wasting their time....and being cheated sleep......
I’m living in Malaysia and hell i'm soooo pissed off....no words in my vocab can describe the anger inside me......2am in the morning rite now......FIA please punish this people!!!!!!!!! Farhana, Kl, Malaysia
A Fatal Blow In The U.S. As a life long fan of F1, for the first year since F1 came to Indy, I was going to view the race on television. Every other year I have gone to Indy to participate in the greatest motor sport event of the season. I must say that I am shocked and upset at the FIA and Michelin. The FIA for not allowing a chicane to be installed, and Michelin for not being able to build a tire that would work at Indy. I know that Michelin knows how to build tires, they have raced at Indy before. But to cause the farce that today's race has become, is inexcusable.
I agree that drivers should not be subject to unnecessary risk of injury, but the solution should have been found prior to race start.
The bottom line of all this is that F1 may have dealt itself a fatal blow in the United States. I know that in my town I am the only fan of F1 that I can find, every other motor sport fan is NASCAR. F1 may have had great turnout for the Indy race, but I would suspect that the majority of the people there were not there for F1, but simply to watch a motor race, regardless of the automobile platform.
My thoughts are with those fans who traveled great distance, at great personal expense, only to have been denied all that could have been due to poor execution on the part of a tire manufacturer and poor public relations effort on the part of FIA.
I am going to take the Michelins off of both of my cars and put Bridgestone's on, since they seem to work better in North America. James Fellmann
