ฌาน 1

' Aloof from sense-desires, aloof from unwholesome thoughts (one attains to) the first jhana (recueillement) which is born of detachment (freedom) and which has reasoning, reflection, joy and happiness.'

- Right Concentration leading to the four dhyanas(recueillements, trances).
In the first stage of dhyana, passionate desires and impure thoughts are discarded, and the feelings of joy and happiness are preserved along with certain mental activities.  

- At the first stage of its development in jhana (Skt. dhyana), passionate desires and some impure thoughts are dispelled and feelings of joy and happiness remain along with certain mental activities.

ฌาน 2  

' By the suppression (elimination) of reasoning and reflection (one attains to) the second jhana which is inner serenity, which is unification of mind, without reasoning and reflection, born of concentration, and which has joy and happiness.'

- In the second dhyana, all intellectual activities are suppressed, tranquility and one-pointedness of mind developed, and the feeling of joy and happiness are still retained.

- In the second stage, all intellectual activities are suppressed, tranquillity and one-pointedness of mind developed, and the feelings of joy and happiness still remain.

ฌาน 3

' By detachment also from joy, (one dwells) in equanimity, mindful and aware, and enjoys happiness in body, (and attains to) the third jhana which the noble ones call: "dwelling in equanimity, mindfulness and happiness".'

- In the third stage, the feeling of joy also disappears while the disposition of happiness still remains in addition to mindful equanimity.

- In the third stage, the feeling of joy, which is an active sensation, disappear too, while the disposition of happiness still remains in addition to mindful equanimity.

ฌาน 4

' By the abandonment of happiness and suffering, by the disappearance already of joy and sorrow, (one attains to) the fourth "jhana", which is neither happiness nor suffering and which is the purity of equanimity-mindfulness.'

- In the fourth dhyana, all feeling of happiness and unhappiness, of joy and sorrow are suppressed, only pure equanimity and mindfulness remaining.

- In the fourth stage, all sensations such as happiness and unhappiness, joy and sorrow disappear, only pure equanimity and awareness remaining.
Thus in the end the mind becomes completely free from any kind of thought or sensation or sentiment.
