This year, on April 22, the present abbot of Fo Guang Shan, Venerable Hsing Ting, allowed twenty monks from this temple join their Earth Day activity. It was magnificent seeing a hundred thousand monks sitting silently accepting offerings. The scene was marvelous! The great leadership and virtues possessed by the abbot were highly praised. Currently in world religion, as in a Catholic gathering in front of the Vatican, the numbers may often reach 100,000 people. Numerous Muslims go to Mecca on pilgrimage. Think of the Buddha's time, millions of people listening to the Buddha's talk. Since the Buddha's nirvana, it has been rare to have a 100,000 people get together at a Buddhist Dharma function. I feel honored by Dhammakaya Temple's great achievement.
As I understand, the reason the people are against Dharamakaya Temple is that may are not satisfied or do not agree with their explaination of the teachings. It is thought that they have too many Mahayana ideas, and that this could lead to disputes in the Sangha, and ultimately destroy the harmony of the group. In fact, during the Buddha's time, the character and the growing environment were different. There were two different types of disciples, forest monastics and monks who lived in the world. At the first gathering after the Buddha's nirvana, because of the different interpretations of the teachings and precepts, there was a division into the Theravada and Mahayana traditions. This was the very beginning of Theravada and Northern Buddism. In the 8th century in Thailand, Mahayana Buddhism was very popular and existed harmoniously with Theravada Buddhism. In fact, they had not had a dispute in their history since 1829. Theravada Buddism in Thailand was divided into two schools, Mahanikaya and Dhammayutthika, due to the different interpretations of the precepts. Thai monastics regardless of lifestyle, dress, retreat, and day for shaving the hair, get along harmoniously. Whether Southern Buddhism or Northern Buddhism, Mahanikaya Buddhism or Dhammayutthika Buddhism, as Makhanikaya and Dhammayutthika have said, "We all believe in the same Buddha; the teachings we all follow focus on Three Dharma Seals. All Buddhists should be unified and move forward for the development of Buddhism and for the benefit of sentinent beings based on these foundations."
Some people ask, "Now that the economic situation is not so good, why are devotees willing to donate money to Dharmakaya Temple to build a giant stupa and statue?" From historical Buddhist architecture, we know that the magnificent stupas and temples are very powerful in guiding people without saying a word. The famous Christian churches are very well designed and shining. The Christian staffs displayed in world museums are made of gold and silver, shining and bright. Those who saw them have given high recognition and praise at the combination of religion and art. Why can't today's Buddhists express Buddhist profundity and greatness through magnificent architecture and statues?
Since ancient times, the proper religious organizations could get support from the majority of their devotees because they could efficiently use donations for education and cultural purposes. So, I hope that we not only see the money owed by the temple; but see how many things the temple has done for society. Don't just see the outer appearance of the temple, but see how much the temple has to offer inside. Don't just see the present Buddhist situation, but see the future direction of Buddhism. Don't just see the small differences, but see the whole development of Buddhism. As you know, since in the inception of Dhammakaya Temple, it has made many contributions to both Buddhism and society.
