There was a group of people that left the city of Jerusalem around 600 B.C. led by the father of one family, named Lehi.
They traveled across the oceans and came to live in the Americas (North and South America) They kept records on metal plates, because paper would not last very long. Often the plates were of a soft metal such as gold to make it easier to write their language. Obviously, the difficulty of writing on metal would mean that only the most important things were written on these plates.
The gold plates that the Book of Mormon comes from, were an abridgment of all of the important records of these peoples. In other words, the man named Mormon took all of these records and picked the most important words, guided by God, he made this record. After all of his family and friends were killed in wars, he traveled to a place which is now in the state of New York in the USA, and buried these plates in a stone box in a hill.
God directed a man in the 1800s, named Joseph Smith where to find the plates and translate them into English. That is what we have as the Book of Mormon.
