i think you totally miss the point. true, humans are not introactively self maximizing, they have tendencies to exhibit relative behaviour such has inequality aversion, which you have described here. (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inequity_aversion) but to say that all of our motivations can be described simply by such desires are simplistic to say the least, and just plain inaccurate at worst. from the most basic, humans need the minimum resources for the sustenance of life, and further resources above the bare minimum for the sustenance of life at a higher standard. basic necessities must be met. to augment from that, it is more than mere jealousy that men and women strive. it is for a certain sort of ideal life that one strives to, not one that is relative, but one that is absolute in its definition, which is idiosyncratic to each individual. it is not merely a life that has to be better than thy neighbour, but a life that one envisions as fitting one's preference--call it 'dreams', 'hopes', or 'goals' if you will. further than that, it is a self actualizing motivation (as much as i hate quoting something as pedestrian as maslow). it is, in fact, what drives most rich people. it is not that they invest for tax purposes (it's quite a ridiculous statement), but it is simply that they do not view their wealth as money, or their venture as just an invesmtent, but they are pitching their own potentiality against the world to truly realize what they are capable of doing. what you are doing is simply reducing ambition to jealousy. you are reducing the very core of human beings--the striving for fulfilling your potentiality--to a hateful human emotion that is jealousy and vanity. i think this is a really Thai trait. it disgusts me how Thais can so paradoxically worship money but at the same time despise those who earn it. even worse, they despise those who legitimately accumulate wealth and worship the dirty bastards who, by merit of their dirtiness, benefit themselves. essentially you are saying that success is worthless, as it is just the need to compare yourself with someone else. no matter you like it or not, money is a guage for success. and by accumulating wealth, you are also accumulating success (except, of course, in the field where monetary compensation might be contrary to accomplishment, such as in many forms of art). you are reducing hopes, dreams, and ambitions to just jealousy, and you are trying to remove these very incentives from the lives. even worse, to equate a disincentivized life to a self sufficiency economy is the blandest mistake one can make, and one that fits a propaganda for the conservatives and those who despise change, growth, and evolution (or revolution). i believe your intent is good--to warn those that striving for success should not be merely based by jealousy and joining the rat race, or by comparing yourself with your friends and complaining without ever doing anything to improveyourself, etc. However, making such sweeping generalization such as this is just plain WRONG. there are plenty of noble motives for the pursuit of an ambitious life. those should be the goal of everyone if thailand is to move forward, and spiteful comments such as these, where ambition is equated to jealousy, SHOULD BE DISMISSED. thailand is lazy enough as it is. i hate these kind of mentality, it even breeds more laziness.
