Um, interesting. Having worked with Citi for a number of transactions, I think they are definately better than local banks but my honest view is that their mid ranking staff (located in Bangkok) are not as good as thei junior staff in HK, Sin, London, NY. I have worked with them all before making this conclusion. To be honest, it is not just Citi, JPMorgan Thailand is just so not active and most things have to be directed from Singapore or HK office. All in all I find that Morgan Stanley and ML are probably the best to deal with. They are incredibly efficient and smart.
This is not to say that Thai bankers are not as good but perhaps they have not been given enough oppurtunities to be engaged in complicated deals. I used to work on deals with HSBC London in the past, they are good but again being a commercial high street bank does not make them as efficient as pure investment banks. This is why Chase decided to merge with JPMorgan. I worked on one deal with HSBC Bangkok and it took them weeks to reply emails!
Cheers
