ok, let's say this first, NOT ONLY FDI is important to the economy, portfolio investment is extremely important as well. fund raising by companies will not be 1) efficient and 2) sufficient without foreign money since the thai market is way too small and unsophisticated. capital will not be sufficient, i.e. not enough, but at the same time it will not be efficient since more sophisticated fund raising will not be possible, and pricing will not be as efficient.
about FDI, it's extremely, extremely, extremely important. biggest industrial sectors in thailand rely on JV's and technological know how from abroad. also, u are right about employment. there's also the effect of liberalization on competition which in the end will benefit consumers.
the only party to loose from free trade are the inefficient enterpreneurs and domestic operations. that is why you see so many people against it. they are either 1) ushering inefficient, loss making busineses that would be better off being bankrupt and 2) too sentimental
case in point: tesco/carrefour vs. local grocery store. tesco/carrefour offers lower price, better service, better quality, better everything; however, it is destroying an aspect of life that is inefficiently sentimental to many people, and suddenly they are 'bad' because they will kill off a lot of old grocery store owner.
