NEW YORK, March 3 (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama forecast a dismal first quarter for the economy as data showed U.S. auto sales fell 40 percent in February and sales of previously existing homes in January tumbled to a record low.
But Obama turned more upbeat after meeting with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown on Tuesday, saying credit would flow again, and he promoted U.S. stocks as a good long-term buy. [ID:nN03474068]
Brown came to Washington calling for called for a "global New Deal" to rescue the world economy, in step with Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, who said even more bold steps were needed to prevent a costly catastrophe. [ID:nN03352803]
Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner stood firmly behind his forecast for recovery in 2011, at which time the U.S. government will need to reduce budget deficits once the stimulative spending spree does its job. [ID:nN03484402].
"The economy's performance in the last quarter of 2008 was the worst in over 25 years. And frankly the first quarter of this year holds out little promise for better returns," Obama said in a speech. [ID:nN03474068]
The latest U.S. auto sales data showed the 15th consecutive monthly drop, with sales off more than 40 percent in February to the lowest level in almost three decades. [ID:nN03494844]
The downbeat housing sales reversed the prior month's gains. [ID:nN03482071]
Obama's short-term outlook coincided with others from the OECD group of developed countries, which warned that world leaders face even more turmoil than had been thought just over a month ago, and the International Monetary Fund, which may cut its global 2009 growth forecast. [ID:nL2586304]
