Thailand economy expands more-than-forecast 9.1%
HONG KONG (MarketWatch) -- Thailand's economy expanded 9.1% in the second quarter from a year earlier, beating expectations during a period that saw the deadliest anti-government protests in the nation's modern history. Analysts surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires had forecast 7.9% growth, while a Reuters survey was anticipating 8%. The figures follow on from 12.6% growth in the first quarter, and lift growth for the half-year period to 10.6%. Thailand's economic planning agency also lifted its full-year growth forecast to a 7%-7.5% range after the data release, up from 3.5%-4.5% in May. Attention will now turn to the decision on interest rates Wednesday, with analysts saying the upbeat growth numbers make it more likely the Thai central bank will nudge the base rate up a quarter-point to 1.75%, adding to a move of the same size last month.
