please do not mix foreign IB's with thai IB's because the recruitment is very different. foreign IB's will happily take grads (in all functions: IB, sales, trading, etc.) from ALL BACKGROUNDS; so you would see philosopher who are exotics traders, historians who are with M&A, physicists with debt capital market, etc.
thailand, on the other hand, is fixated on the degree names! imo, it is because:
1) they dont have resources to train new recruits .. they rely on people from similar backgrounds (i.e. credit analysts, treasury, research, or industry experience, etc.) with the experience to hit the ground running. foreign investment banks have the resource to send analysts to two months boot camps in lavish new york or london.
2) the signalling mechanisms by mere degree level, i.e. looking only at Bachelour or Masters classifications, is deeply flawed because the educational standard here is unfortunately lower than elsewhere. whereas in the US an Ivy graduate would likely perform well irrespective of the degrees taken--say, a philosophy graduate from an Ivy will still perform better than a finance graduate from a community college--in Thailand even graduating from Chula or Thammasat is not a good enough garauntee of performance. Thus, one needs more signals to ascertain the quality of the candidates, i.e. specialised degrees, masters degree, etc.
and such is the way life (in thailand) works.
