As K.eMile said krub. Arrington pays $4M back to the team to buy out his contract, well sort of. We all know that he didn't get along very well with Gregg Williams plus the $6.5M bonus fiasco (which is due on June 15 and he will never see that money) and wouldn't be with the team afterall, although he was a "Mr.Redskin."
Originally, the Redskins planned to cut him after June 1 to reduce the cap hit. According to http://www.thewarpath.net/WarpathRedskinsCap.htm his cap figure in '06 is ~12 M, if the team cut him now, ALL of that number will count against THIS year's cap. His base salary is only $545K but his signing bonus is $31.76M, which is prorated over the length of his contract (8 years, simply click on the "CapBonuses" tap on the above link).
If he is cut after June 1, only ~$5M will hit this year's and the team will save roughly $7M becuase the $7M will count against NEXT year's cap. However, Arrington figured out that he won't be on the team's future plan anyway and wanted to opt out to bacome a free agent while the market is still peak. Beacuse after June 1, most teams already fill up the roster and get ready for the training camp. So, it's good for both sides that the team cut him now and save $4M that he pays back and move on and so Arrington can find a new team early on.
Therefore, instead of saving $7M by releasing him after June 1, the Redskins save $4M by doing it now and they did it right after the NFL decided to push back the FA deadlines for the second time.
I assume that both sides had an agreement that if the CBA talks still alive and have the potential to be renewed, the team will put him on waivers. Which it did.
It's difficult to give a clear explanation about salary cap. You can ask me again if anything is not clear. I'll try my best to answer every question krub, though some questions might need me to do a little homework.
