Baltemar Brito-Assitant Manager / Coach
The Brazilian was a player, a 'libero' at Rio Ave when Jose Mourinho's father was coach there, and was picked by Jose to be his assistant when he went to UD Leiria in 2001 for his second management job.
Jose's requirements had been: "I want someone who knows how to speak to the players, and who can assert himself and has authority in the changing rooms, and someone who is - big!" Brito has been with him ever since.
When Chelsea lost the second League game of the 2006/7 season, Brito (the name by which he is known within the camp) was there, accompanying Mourinho to his press briefings.
It was a 'We are together' signal from the management team. It was the silent support that even Jose Mourinho needs.
Look back over the Mourinho era, and you will always see Brito in the background in times of stress.
Brito was the volunteer in Mourinho's first season at Chelsea who said the players could shave his head if they won a Carling Cup tie at Newcastle.
Victory was claimed only in extra-time, which made the aeroplane journey home very late, but nevertheless in the dressing room after the game the shaving was done. It was all part of establishing the early spirit of this era.
More than anything he's an enthusiast, a motivator. Aside from the Portuguese speakers in the squad, and to a lesser extent the Spanish speakers, he can't talk to the players like his fellow assistant manager Steve Clarke can. But he finds his ways. And, most importantly, he talks to Jose.
Jose never walks alone.
