City's Bresciano deal hits trouble

Manchester City have become embroiled in a financial row with Palermo that is threatening to end their hopes of adding the Australian international Mark Bresciano to their squad.
Bresciano was expected to be confirmed as Sven-Goran Eriksson's ninth summer signing yesterday, having agreed personal terms and passed a routine medical. However, the midfielder was ordered back to Sicily after Palermo rejected City's attempts to renegotiate the terms of payment over the proposed £5.4m transfer.
The Serie A club objected to City trying to structure the deal so they would pay only a small percentage of the transfer fee up front, followed by a series of payments over the course of Bresciano's contract. "Manchester City have not respected the initial terms of our agreement," Palermo's sporting director, Rino Foschi, complained last night. "The economic plan they have proposed is not the one we had dictated and, if they do not make a step backwards, I will no longer give my blessing to the transfer. We are not willing to wait any longer. Rules must be respected."
City insist that talks are ongoing and Alistair Mackintosh, the chief executive, was still trying to rescue the deal late last night, with the club's new owner, Thaksin Shinawatra, willing to take his spending on new players above the £40m mark. Eriksson has asked to be kept informed and it is thought City will offer Palermo a compromise. However, the former England coach will not be encouraged by the noises coming from Sicily as he seeks to bring in a player who has won 64 caps for his country.
