International round-up 09/09/2007 11:15
As we get today's international round-up underway, we can only start at one place and with one man, Micah Richards. His first international goal put the seal on England's 3-0 Wembley win over Israel. Many had tipped the game as a "must win" for Steve McClaren, but from the early on the outcome never really looked in doubt, just how many goals it would be. Another Platt Lane Academy Graduate, Shaun Wright-Phillips, opened the scoring on 20 minutes before Michael Owen's stunning second four minutes after the break.
Croatia kept the pressure on England by returning to the top of Group E with a 2-0 home victory over Estonia. Defender Vedran Corluka played the full 90 minutes.
Elsewhere, former England head coach Sven-Goran Eriksson got what he wanted, if not the result, as Andreas Isaksson made his first appearance of the season in Sweden's 0-0 home draw with rivals Denmark. The point was enough to keep the Swede's top of Group F.
In Group D, Stephen Ireland's seventh minute strike gave the Republic of Ireland a great start away to Slovakia, but an injury-time equaliser left Ireland and City skipper Richard Dunne deflated in Bratislava with the 2-2 draw.
It was no better for Martin Petrov as Bulgaria lost 2-0 to the Netherlands in Amsterdam and never looked in the game.
On the Under 21 scene, Nedum Onuoha celebrated England's 3-0 victory over Montenegro with his first goal for the Young Lions, a sixth minute header. Joe Hart, mainly unemployed for the most part, added another clean sheet to his name.
Kasper Schmeichel completed a hat-trick of City keepers' clean sheets as Denmark Under 21s put Lithuania to the sword in Aalborg winning the game 4-0.
Striker Ched Evans played the full match in Grenoble as a brave Wales lost 1-0 to France in their opening UEFA 2009 Championship Qualifying game.
Neither Garry Breen nor Paul Marshall featured for the Republic of Ireland Under 21s as a slick Portugal side swept to a 2-0 Euro Qualifying victory at Turner's Cross on Friday night.
After earning a first senior cap during the last round of international games, Gelson Fernandes was back in Under 21 action for Switzerland's Euro 2009 Qualifier against Macedonia in Wohlen. It wasn't the best of days for the lively midfielder as the Swiss were held to a 1-1 draw and he was one of three players shown red cards by Scottish referee, William Collum.
Finally, Christian Mouritsen's Faroe Islands can count themselves unlucky, as Italy needed a late goal to secure a 2-1 win in Trento on Friday.
