Papers: Protect our Ron
Sir Alex in Ronaldo rant Alex Ferguson fears Cristiano Ronaldo may fall victim to footballs hatchet men. And the Manchester United boss believes opposition crowds are turning refs against his winger. Ferguson said: I am worried too many defenders are pursuing a policy of stopping Ronaldo by fair means or foul. Some of the tackles on him have been ridiculous this season. I dont mean defenders should let him through, but I do expect refs to protect him more. I expect opposition fans to boo our man but I dont expect refs to be influenced by the hostility. Special players like Ronaldo, whom fans want to see play, need to be encouraged rather than kicked out of the game. Ben Kinsella, The Sun
Elsewhere, the papers are gushing after the Reds' storming victory against Middlesbrough on Saturday. The Mirror likened Wayne Rooney's performance to Harry Potter, claiming "United's very own young wizard cast a spell over Old Trafford". The Telegraph was slightly more down-to-earth in their praise, simply describing United's football as "magnificent stuff".
With Sir Alex's men travelling to Arsenal this weekend, The Daily Mail report the usual war of words between Ferguson and Wenger has started already. The Gunners' boss, after seeing his side recover from an early goal to grab a point at Anfield, said: "It will be another test against United but I can say for sure we will go into it even stronger after this performance. We will be much stronger."
