A look back at Saturday's win 26/11/2007 09:50
The Daily Mirror give us their view on Saturday's win...
'Man City 2-1 Reading'
It's fair to say Stephen Ireland has caused Sven Goran Eriksson a few headaches, what with the infamous Grannygate incident followed by his madcap decision to drop his shorts - but the Manchester City boss insists he is anything but pants.
Eriksson has become Ireland's biggest fan after helping the troubled midfielder get his focus back on football.
Ireland was in danger of losing his way when he lied that his grandmother had died to get out of playing for the Republic of Ireland and subsequently quit international football in embarrassment.
He then caused more controversy when he celebrated his match-winner against Sunderland by flashing his Superman underpants.
Eriksson showed Ireland the resultant letter from Soho Square warning him about his future behaviour and the Swede has been delighted by his professional response.
Eriksson says no-one covers more yards for City than Ireland while his spectacular stoppage-time winner against Reading was another example of his growing class.
He even managed to keep his shorts on and a relieved Eriksson said: "After what happened last time I sat down with him and showed him the letter the FA wrote and that was enough. He loves to play football. He loves to practise.
"He is hard-working every session we have. He comes out in a T-shirt and shorts every session even if I think it is freezing cold - and bear in mind I am a Swede - but he runs so much he does not feel the cold.
"I've only got to know him since I started this job but he is a good boy and when we were young we all had a few problems."
Ireland's superb right-foot volley maintained City's 100 per cent home record after it looked like Reading would become the first side to spoil it.
Everything was going to plan for City when Martin Petrov opened the scoring in the 11th minute after Elano had hit the post and Emile Mpenza had been denied.
But City sat back and the Royals equalised against the run of play two minutes before the interval when the unmarked James Harper smashed the ball home from just inside the box.
The Blues staged a late rally and thought their final chance had gone when Geovanni wastefully scooped the ball over the bar.
But the Brazilian made amends in the fourth minute of stoppage time when he headed the ball on for Ireland to fire home past Marcus Hahnemann.
City remain third and Eriksson is happy their fans are dreaming of Champions League football, even if he refuses to set any targets.
"It's good that the fans have expectations," he said. "It's always better to have high expectations than low ones.
"As for the fans, why shouldn't they dream and be happy over what we are doing? It's fantastic out in Manchester when we do well. The fans come up and say well done and that's very nice. The important thing is that we keep our feet on the ground."
Reading have still not won away in the league this season and exasperated boss Steve Coppell blames the fixtures computer.
He claims it's unfair that his side have had to hit the road after every international break. "Ourselves and Liverpool are the only ones who've been away every game after all four international breaks," he said.
"We've travelled 1,800 miles for our away matches and I feel that is a factor. Some teams have had four home games, we've had four away.
"I think the FA are getting enough stick, so maybe we can turn it on to the fixtures computer. But who's going to listen to us? We're only Reading?
"Liverpool have had it even worse because they've had 12.45pm kick-offs, but they've got a big enough squad to cope."
