Threat to City's Euro dream
CITY could yet be denied access to next season's Champions League - even if they finish in the top four.
UEFA have confirmed that only four English teams will be allowed into the competition next season.
And if Liverpool win the Champions League but finish outside the Premier League's top four, they will still take the fourth English spot.
UEFA tidied up their rules on qualification after Rafa Benitez's men won the No1 Euro trophy in 2005 but only finished fifth in the league, behind city rivals Everton.
A compromise was eventually reached which allowed Liverpool to enter the following season's competition in the first qualifying round, with Everton joining two rounds later.
But if there were a repeat this time, Liverpool would enter the Champions League in the group stages, along with the top two teams in the Premier League, and the side finishing third would go in at the third qualifying stage.
The team finishing fourth - which could be City - would go into the UEFA Cup.
European football's governing body confirmed the ruling after City captain Richard Dunne told MEN Sport yesterday about the club's dreams of a top-four finish.
The Blues went into today's game at Everton in fourth place, one point ahead of Liverpool, who face Inter Milan in the Champions League first knockout stage next month.
UEFA spokesman said: "There cannot be five teams from one national association in the Champions League."
