Anderson on a high
ANDERSON'S outstanding performances for United this season have earned him international recognition.
But Sir Alex Ferguson may not be delighted to hear that the midfielder is in contention for Brazil's Olympic squad.
If called up for the Beijing Games, the 19-year-old would miss the start of next term because the tournament is on August 6-23.
He's been a revelation at Old Trafford after signing from Porto last summer. But at the end of a campaign when United hope to be pushing on three fronts, Ferguson would have rather seen him resting this summer.
Instead, he faces losing him altogether for the start of the 2008-9 season, while he would also be away with the squad beforehand to prepare for the tournament.
It would be a considerable loss for United who have seen the player make a meteoric rise in just a short spell at the club.
When signed along with Nani at the end of the last season, he was initially only expected to be used sparingly while he adapted to English football.
Pivotal
But he has gone on to become a pivotal part of United's bid to retain the Premiership title, as well as their challenge for the Champions League and FA Cup.
Indeed, he's established himself as Ferguson's most reliable central midfielder, holding down a place ahead of the more experienced players such as Owen Hargreaves, Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher at various stages of the campaign.
And so impressive has Anderson's form been that Brazil manager Dunga has called him up for the first time since last summer's Copa America.
Anderson is in the squad that face Ireland in Dublin next month. Dunga revealed he had deliberately picked a youthful group with the Beijing Games in mind.
"I named players of Olympic age before," he said. "It's important for them to gain experience in the national team environment. The games will be useful to keep watching the men who can play in Beijing."
While it may be a blow to United, Anderson's call-up is recognition of his outstanding performances this term.
In his first season he has exceeded all expectations, making 20 appearances already, when he was expected to be behind Paul Scholes, Hargreaves and Carrick in the reckoning for central midfield.
Remarkably, Anderson was even being compared to United flops Kleberson and Eric Djemba-Djemba in the first couple of months of his Old Trafford career.
But after shrugging off those doubts following the Carling Cup exit to Coventry, he snatched his chance when Scholes was sidelined with a knee injury in October and Hargreaves continued to struggle to get over a tendonitis problem.
Since then he hasn't looked back - showing a tantilising glimpse of what he can achieve when overshadowing Cesc Fabregas in United's 2-2 draw with Arsenal earlier this season.
