D-day looms for Bojinov
IT is impossible to judge a player's ability on 49 minutes of first-team football, which is why City are hoping they haven't seen the last of Valeri Bojinov.
As Torino, Genoa, Sampdoria and Udinese consider making an offer to take the Bulgarian striker back to Italy, Bojinov himself has to decide whether he really wants to bring his English adventure to an end after one heavily truncated season.
His comments in the Italian press a couple of weeks ago suggest that it is, at the very least, something he has considered.
The 22-year-old spoke of being "very happy" that Serie A clubs were interested in him, because it meant that he was still fondly remembered in Italy.
Considering that he moved to Italy at the age of 15, and had spent his entire playing career there before joining City just under a year ago, Bojinov's fondness for the country is entirely understandable.
He also tempered his comments by acknowledging that, with three years left on his Blues contract, a return to Italy is not going to happen if new boss Mark Hughes decides he doesn't want to sell him.
And yet Bojinov would surely leave Eastlands with a pang of regret if he did not get the chance to show City's fans what he could do.
It seems much longer than a year now since Sven-Goran Eriksson started his City reign by signing eight players in around the time it takes most people to book a holiday.
Of those eight players, Bojinov was the signing to create the most excitement among City fans at the time.
His stocky build, sure touch and enthusiasm, coupled with a respectable scoring record in Serie A, suggested that he would be just the ticket to terrorise Premier League defences.
At his first press conference, with Eriksson translating his answers from Italian, Bojinov spoke excitedly about the challenge of playing in the Premier League, and of helping a young City team grow together to enjoy success.
Eriksson's decision to pay £5.75million to Fiorentina for his services would, it was generally agreed, turn out to be money well spent.
