Rafa Discusses Alonso And Barry Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has today revealed that elegant midfielder Xabi Alonso was close to being sold to Premier League rivals Arsenal. He also reflected on the Gareth Barry saga ahead of his team's season opener.
The 26-year-old Spanish international, fresh from his Euro 2008 success with Spain earlier in the summer, has been the subject of transfer speculation in recent weeks, with many believing he would move to Juventus. That move fell through however, when the Italian club bought Sevillas Christian Poulsen instead.
Arsenal were the next to be linked with him. Arsene Wenger has so far remained quiet on the subject. However, Benitez has admitted that talks have taken place between the two clubs, while denying any involvement in them, saying.
I was not involved in the talks about Alonso and Arsenal. If you want to talk about these players you must talk to the chief executive of our club who was handling the discussions, he said, shifting the responsibility towards Rick Parry.
Arsenal are known to be in the market for a defensive midfielder since losing Mathieu Flamini to AC Milan, and selling Brazilian Gilberto Silva to Panathinaikos earlier in the summer, and are still looking.
Benitez also spoke about Aston Villa midfielder Gareth Barrys proposed move to the club, once again insisting that he did not bear any responsibility for the move falling through.
I get blamed for everything, for global warming to high petrol prices," he said. "But in this case I want to be very clear. Since I talked to Martin O'Neill about the situation in April, I have not talked to anyone at Aston Villa.
"All the talks have been between our chief executive Rick Parry, the owner and the chief executive of Aston Villa. And those talks have all been pretty good.
Liverpool have been chasing the highly rated England international throughout the summer, and while Benitez is still keen to add Barry to his player roster, Villa have so far rejected any offer from Liverpool. With time running out, it looks highly unlikely that either of the two moves will happen, and Rafa is keen to ensure that fans know exactly what went on.
