GEPA-pictures Ivanovic, Zvonareva Reach Title Match in Linz
LINZ, Austria - They made it through in very different fashion, but Ana Ivanovic and Vera Zvonareva set up a championship clash between the Top 2 seeds at the Generali Ladies Linz with semifinals wins on Saturday.
Second seed Zvonareva was the first of the two to advance, crushing No.6 seed Marion Bartoli in just 51 minutes, 60 61. Zvonareva won the first 10 games - without facing a single game point - before Bartoli finally got on the board, breaking Zvonareva's serve to make the score 60 41. But the Russian won the last two games of the match to beat Bartoli for the sixth time in seven meetings.
Ivanovic, the No.1 seed at the Tier II event, had far more trouble with No.3 seed Agnieszka Radwanska in the second semifinal of the day, getting past the crafty Polish youngster in a two-hour, 12-minute contest, 62 36 75. After dropping the first set Radwanska got her teeth into the match, winning the second set and even going up a break in the third. But the power game of Ivanovic found its range again, eventually improving to 3-0 lifetime against Radwanska.
"It was a really tough match," Ivanovic said. "I started well in the first set. The second set wasn't as good as my first serve percentage dropped, and Agnieszka was getting the balls really low and short. The third set was a bit up and down. I rushed serving for the match at 5-3 and made some bad mistakes, but I stayed calm and worked hard and managed to go on and win. It was a really emotional third set. I felt energetic and was really pumped up."
For Zvonareva, reaching the final is no surprise considering her form since the US Open. She suffered a shock second round loss at the year's final Grand Slam but has gone 17-4 since then, a stretch that includes capturing her second Sony Ericsson WTA Tour title of the year at Guangzhou and reaching her third Tier I final of the year at Moscow (where she was a runner-up to Jelena Jankovic).
Ivanovic is now in her first final since winning the French Open and subsequently rising to No.1 in the world. Between then and coming into this week, the Serb had gone 7-7 in seven tournaments, reaching just one semifinal (last week in Zürich); but this week she has won three matches in a row for the first time since her career-defining moment in Paris, and now goes for her third title of the year.
The two Top 10 players have had an intriguing head-to-head, which is led by Ivanovic, 3-2. Ivanovic won their first career meeting at Warsaw in 2005, then lost the next two at the Australian Open and Charleston in 2007; but the Serb has taken their last two, at Luxembourg last fall and at Indian Wells earlier this year.
"Vera has been playing well the last couple of weeks, finishing runner-up at Moscow and qualifying for the Sony Ericsson Championships, so it will be a tough match," Ivanovic said.
"My semifinal obviously took longer than hers but tennis is also a mental game, and this match gives me confidence."
The doubles final will also pit the Top 2 seeds against each other, as No.1 seeds Cara Black and Liezel Huber will battle No.2 seeds Katarina Srebotnik and Ai Sugiyama. Srebotnik and Sugiyama won their semifinal match against No.3 seeds Kveta Peschke and Rennae Stubbs on Friday; Black and Huber won their semi against Jill Craybas and Tamarine Tanasugarn on Saturday.
