อันนี้เป็นข่าวเกี่ยวกับความหวังเรื่องโค้ชใหม่ Ana Ivanovic hopes new coach will jump start her career
Barry Flatman, The Sunday Times Tennis Correspondent, in Dubai Not long ago Ana Ivanovic was the It girl of tennis. Delightfully photogenic, a charming conversationalist and rather good at the game. So good in fact she won last springs French Open title and subsequently climbed to the No 1 spot on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour world rankings.
For the most part things have unravelled alarmingly since. First there was a spate of embarrassing and early defeats. Then an agonising hand injury followed worrying health issues, a short lived but very public romance with tennis playboy Fernando Verdasco and a debilitating crisis of confidence.
Early this year Ivanovic, 21, identified the need for a full-time coach to help put her career back on track and formulated a short list of candidates. One surprise name that figured was that of John Lloyd, Britains Davis Cup captain, who only those with a long memory will recall coached with some effect Swedens Catarina Lindqvist. She reached a couple of grand-slam semi-finals and the worlds top ten but has been retired from the sport for more than 16 years. Then he was employed in an attempt to try and help Tracy Austin recapture former glories but that didnt come to much.
In the end Lloyd did not get the job but another man with exemplary credentials did and Ivanovic is now extremely hopeful that American Craig Kardon will jump start her career after sliding to eighth in the world rankings. Kardon has worked with the very best, coaching Martina Navratilova at her peak. Other notable charges to tap into his skills have included grand-slam champions Lindsay Davenport, Mary Pierce and Jennifer Capriati.
There were also less successful liaisons with Alexandra Stevenson and Xavier Malisse but nobody gets it right all the time. But when his job application includes the following endorsement from no less a judge than Billie Jean King, then the man has got to have something going for him. Craig Kardon is wonderful, King said.
Ivanovic is not quite ready to make such a statement but she is more than happy with the way things have gone since she teamed up with Kardon after the Australian Open where for the third grand-slam tournament in succession she failed to progress beyond the third round.
We have only been working together for a few weeks but Im already really seeing the benefit, Ivanovic, who faces a demanding prospect of facing both Williams sisters, Serena and then Venus, at the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships, said. My confidence was not too good for a while but weve worked hard at getting that back and Craig has also made me realise just where to put tennis in my life.
Its a little strange to say because tennis is everything to me but it completely took over all my thoughts. When I was practicing I put everything into it and when I wasnt I was thinking about what I should do in the next practice session. Then when I actually got out on court to play a match I was thinking about too many things.
Craig has told me just to play my natural game which was to attack and not to get too confused with other aspects. It appears to be working so far but its going to be a long term thing.
The deal is currently on a trial period but there is every indication the 48 year-old from California will be a fixture as Ivanovic's first permanent coach since the services of Australian David Taylor were dispensed of a couple of years ago. We have a firm view of how my game should develop and which direction my game is going to go, she said. I feel very confident it's going to be good.
