Novak Djokovic wins dreary final
World No3 takes title but fails to win over critics with performance in DubaiBarry Flatman in Dubai Just when questions were being asked about Novak Djokovics credentials to be a member of the illustrious gang of four at the pinnacle of mens tennis, he demonstrated the long-held belief that success in sport owes much to snatching chances and even more to timing.
Rafael Nadal was back in Majorca, resting his troublesome knees, Roger Federer was closer at hand, just a mile or so away in his luxury apartment on the opulent Palm, and Andy Murray, the man so many expected to be jousting with Djokovic to claim both the Dubai Tennis Championships title and the $US383,000 winners cheque, had just returned to Britain to undergo medical tests in an attempt to identify the virus that ruled him out after the quarter-final stage.
Cynics might say Djokovic won his first title since claiming last years calendar-ending Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai by default. Admittedly the Serb struggled for much of the week to rediscover the form that enabled him to become a Grand Slam champion at the 2008 Australian Open.
Even the most positive of observers would struggle to term Djokovics 7-5,6-3 win over the fourth-seeded Spaniard David Ferrer a classic. In truth the match was inferior to much of the tennis played this week. But black-clad champion, mindful his game had slipped below the meticulous standards he set himself for 2009, described this victory as a very special moment. The win was particularly opportune in terms of recapturing confidence.
Next week Djokovic spearheads the Serbian team to play Davis Cup champions Spain on the clay of Benidorm before setting off for the Californian desert, where he will attempt a repeat of his win at last years Masters 1000 at Indian Wells.
Winning any tournament is a huge success and Dubai has grown into one of the strongest events on the tour, said Djokovic as he celebrated the 12th title of his career. Fighting qualities got me through and Im really proud of myself.
I havent started the year as I would have wanted to and havent played in the way people expected. I made some changes in terms of my racket, which was quite risky, but as the weeks go on I feel more and more comfortable. This week I just tried to release the pressure that was on me.
Djokovic arrived in the final buoyant after a semi-final win that left him as elated as the evening he claimed the Australian Open. Proving he could function on an oppressively hot afternoon, the top-seeded Serb returned to his preferred nocturnal existence under the Aviation Club floodlights for the final but the touch he showed to overcome Gilles Simon appeared to desert him.
Critics of Djokovic have long stressed his inability consistently to hit telling volleys as an alarming deficiency in his game. Mark Woodforde, one half of Australias most successful doubles partnership, tried to educate him in the nuances of the art, but to little avail.
Therefore, when his initial opportunities at the net resulted in glaring errors, nobody should have been too surprised. However, when forehand errors began to proliferate off the newly acquired Head racket there was cause for some alarm. It is no secret that Djokovic has struggled to come to grips with the racket he swapped for his more trusty Wilson at the end of last year in return for a vast capital gain.
He admits there are times he feels the Head is just too powerful and such seemed to be the case as several viciously hit forehand drives ended more than a yard over the baseline. Ferrer, a counter-puncher who thrives on the pace generated by his opponent, was moving nimbly but he too was increasingly prone to wild forehand errors.
Indeed, for an encounter waged between the world No 3 and a player who filled the No 4 slot this time last year, the tennis bordered on shambolic. Break of serve repeatedly followed break of serve as mistakes proliferated. Even when Djokovic stepped up to serve for the opening set, he managed to get his first ball into court only once and was broken to love. Surely if Federer was watching he could not have been too concerned by the standard of play.
One man needed to show a degree of authority and eventually it was Djokovic. This time he held his serve to love, crunching home one ace and another two unreturnable serves. Ferrer seemed briefly stunned, he allowed his opponent to win another three points in succession and, after one set-point was saved, the Spaniard could not quite contort his body sufficiently to clip a volley over the net.
In the second set it soon became apparent that the name of Ferrer would not be joining those of his compatriots Alex Corretja, Juan Carlos and Nadal on the trophy. He still ran relentlessly but a break of serve in the second game dented Spanish hopes.
Briefly it seemed as though Ferrers fight might feature a late rally as an untimely Djokovic forehand almost allowed him to negate that earlier break but any hope was short-lived. In common with the pattern of the opening set, Ferrer was unable to hold his own serve and a double fault was even more benevolent.
Djokovic did not require any more pushing although the match point did provoke one last conflict. Djokovic believed he had hit a winning ace, Ferrer disagreed. The big screens, however, revealed that victory did indeed belong to the Serb.
