Mexico and Venezuela will crown champions this weekend, while the leadership could change hands in Argentina, Brazil, Korea Republic, Singapore and Thailand. With appetising fixtures in Angola and the USA, FIFA.com previews the upcoming action outside Europe.
Argentinian Clausura: Three-way fight continues
Three teams remain in the title hunt with four rounds remaining, and they will all play bottom-half opponents this weekend. Leaders Lanus, spearheaded by the prolific Jose Sand, will entertain San Lorenzo, while Velez Sarsfield, one point off the pace, visit Gimnasia Jujuy. Third-placed Huracan will charge Javier Pastore, who has scored four times in his last two outings, with firing them to a home victory over Banfield.
Claudio Borghi's first match at the reins of struggling Argentinos Juniors will be at home to River Plate, another of the teams he represented during his playing career.
High stakes: Gimnasia La Plata and Racing will be desperate to win their encounter and ease their relegation fears.
Players to watch: Alejandro Da Silva will look to improve Newell's Old Boys' chances of Copa Sudamericana qualification against Arsenal, who will hope an inspired performance from Luciano Leguizamon can help them escape from the bottom.
Brasileirao: Recife-Rio duels
Internacional will take the competition's only 100 per cent record into Round 4, when newly-promoted Avai, who have three draws to their name, visit the Beira-Rio. Free-scoring Nautico, two points back in second, welcome Rio heavyweights Fluminense to Recife, while their arch-rivals Sport travel in the opposite direction to meet Botafogo in a battle of two sides seeking their first victory.
Fourth-placed Cruzeiro edged Sao Paulo 2-1 at home in the first leg of their Copa Libertadoes quarter-final on Wednesday, but this time the reigning Brazilian champions will have home advantage.
High stakes: One point separates Santos and Corinthians, sixth and ninth respectively, heading into their Paulista derby.
Players to watch: An extraordinary winner from Eder Luis last time out helped Atletico Mineiro climb to third, but they must now nullify another player with a penchant for the spectacular; Santo Andre's veteran magician Marcelinho Carioca.
American Major League Soccer: Returns
Dwayne De Rosario and Adrian Serioux both lifted the MLS Cup with Houston Dynamo, but the Toronto FC duo will strive to undo their old club when they return to Texas for a battle of teams third in their respective sections. Columbus Crew, fifth in the Eastern Conference, will also have to content with a former employer, namely Sigi Schmid, who is now at the controls of high-flying Seattle Sounders after guiding the Ohio outfit to the title last term.
Chicago Fire, top out west and with Cuauhtemoc Blanco and Brian McBride thriving, will defend the competition's only undefeated record at home to struggling FC Dallas.
High stakes: At the foot of the east, New York Red Bulls will go all out for victory at home to Colorado Rapids, fourth in the opposite pool.
Players to watch: Landon Donovan will try to propel Los Angeles Galaxy to a second win of the campaign, while in-form Kansas City Wizards midfielder Davy Arnaud will look to orchestrate an away win in California.
Thai Premier League: Tight at the top
With three teams within three points of them, the supporters of unbeaten pacesetters Bangkok Glass will demand victory from Nantawat Tansopa and team-mates at draw specialists Bangkok United, whose inspiration often comes from the mercurial Kittisak Siriwan.
Third-placed Osotspa will travel to Rajnavy Rayong, but the round's biggest attraction will unfold at the Princess Sirindhorn Stadium, where runners-up Chonburi, for whom Kone Mohamed and Pipob On-Mo are on song, host fourth-placed Muang Thong United.
High stakes: Eighth-placed Nakhon Pathom will entertain a TOT side two points and three berths above them.
Players to watch: Defending champions PEA, down in 11th, will hope Apipoo Sunthornpanawet can kick-start a revival under new coach Thongsuk Sampahungsith, while their Round 12 opponents Thai Port will charge Pipat Tonkanya with keeping them in the top six.
Angolan Girabola: Part two
Angolan football is on a high following the installation of Manuel Jose at the national team reins. However, focus will be firmly on domestic matters when the second half of the season commences. Leaders Petro Atletico, eight points clear, will unleash the prolific David on rock-bottom Academia Lobito.
Second-placed Primeiro de Agosto, for whom Bena and Love Kabungula form a lethal attack, will visit another team in the relegation zone, a Primeiro de Maio side nonetheless seeking a fourth win in five outings, while Academia Soyo, one point back in third, host fourth-bottom Desportivo Huila.
High stakes: Recreativo Libolo, in fourth, need victory to stay in touch at the summit, while a win would move ASA level on points with their hosts.
Players to watch: Benfica Luanda forward Vado and his Santos counterpart Manucho Barros could be crucial to the outcome of this their mid-table encounter.
Elsewhere
Pumas will take a slender cushion into the second leg of the Mexican Clausura final after Dante Lopez scored the only goal at home to Pachuca, who will look to Argentinian Christian Giminez for stimulation in Hidalgo. The resistance of Tuzos No1 Miguel Calero, 38, and 39-year-old Sergio Bernal, who will keep goal for the visitors, could prove crucial to the outcome.
Deportivo Italia and Caracas FC will go into the second leg of their Venezuelan Clausura decider all square. The former will entrust attackers Cristian Casseres and Richard Blanco with capitalising upon home advantage, while the Copa Libertadores 2009 quarter-finalists will charge Dario Figueroa and Rafael Castellin with undoing their cross-city enemies.
Leaders Gwangju Sangmu will visit fourth-placed FC Seoul in the only match on the Korean K-League calendar. Victory would move Dejan Damjanovic and Co level on points with their visitors, who will hope Kim Myung-Joong and Choi Sung-Kuk can thrust them five clear at the summit.
Home United and Singapore Armed Forces, arch-rivals and the country's two most successful clubs, will collide in the Singaporean S-League. An away point is all SAF, whose prolificacy owes much to Aleksandar Duric, require to eject Gombak United from the driving seat.
