Djokovic Passes Rochus Test; Haas Edges Kohlschreiber In All-German Semi-final
ATP World Tour No. 4 Novak Djokovic reached his sixth ATP World Tour final of the season after passing a stern test from Belgian qualifier Olivier Rochus 7-6(7), 6-4 on Saturday at the Gerry Weber Open, an ATP World Tour 250 tennis tournament in Halle, Germany. The No. 2 seed started the match well, breaking serve in the second game to create a 3-0 lead. However, No. 136-ranked Rochus showed the fighting qualities that saw him reach the semi-finals of an ATP World Tour event for the first time this season by breaking back to level at 4-4 and later forcing a tie-break.
Rochus had chances to clinch :-)-set lead when he held set points at 6-5 and 7-6 in the tie-break before Djokovic hit back to win the last three points. One break of serve in the fifth game of the second set sufficed for Djokovic as he wrapped up victory in one hour and 54 minutes.
"I had to work for my points, especially on my serve," assessed Djokovic. "I had some tough encounters with him in the past. I knew he is a player, who likes to play on fast surfaces. You could see what a great touch he has. From the baseline, he barely makes mistakes. So, I had to change the pace, maybe make some variety, go to the net and serve out well."
The 22-year-old Djokovic, who saved five match points in his second-round win over Florent Serra on Thursday, improved his 2009 match record to 43-12 bouncing back strongly from a surprise third-round defeat to Philipp Kohlschreiber at Roland Garros.
Djokovic is looking to win his third title of the season to join the trophies he captured at Dubai (d. Ferrer) and at his inaugural hometown tournament in Belgrade (d. Kubot). The right-hander has a 13-9 mark in tour-level finals and is looking to clinch his first grass-court title after finishing runner-up to Rafael Nadal at the Queens Club this time last year.
In the final, Djokovic takes a 2-0 career lead into his clash with German wild card Tommy Haas (pictured), who edged a close encounter with countryman Philipp Kohlschreiber 2-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(3).
"Because I have been on the ATP World Tour for such a long time and am already 31 years old, these are moments you just have to enjoy. Thats for sure," said Haas. "To make it to the finals with such a match is really special for me and the fact that it is in Germany makes it extra special. It was very important for me that I managed to turn things round."
After losing serve twice in the first and seventh games to surrender the first set, Haas held his nerve to hit back in the second set tie-break and level the match. The 31 year old was then forced to battle back as Kohlschreiber served for the match at 5-3 in the final set before clinching victory with his 15th ace of the match in the deciding tie-break after two hours and 12 minutes.
World No. 41 Haas, who reached a career-high No. 2 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings in May 2002, is through to his first ATP World Tour final in over two years since he clinched his 11th career crown at Memphis (d. Roddick).
Speculating on the clash with Djokovic in the final, Haas said: "I havent played him in a long time. Since Indian Wells where I had the chance to break him in the second set and played a good tie-break. But for sure he is the favourite. I think if I use my chances, provided I will get them, I will have a good chance tomorrow."
Haas has an 11-9 mark in ATP World Tour finals and is looking for his second title on German soil after triumphing in Stuttgart in 2001 (d. Mirnyi). Since losing the 2002 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Rome final, Haas has been unbeaten in six consecutive final appearances.
The Florida native came into Halle after pushing eventual champion Roger Federer to five sets in the fourth round at Roland Garros he had led by two sets to love and held a break point that would have seen him serve for the match in the third set. Afterwards his South African Airways 2009 ATP Ranking improved from No. 63 to No. 41.
The No. 24-ranked Kohlschreiber was looking to reach his second successive final in Halle after finishing runner-up to Federer in the 2008 title match. The 25 year old, who knocked out World No. 4 Novak Djokovic to reach the Roland Garros fourth round two weeks ago, was contesting his first ATP World Tour semi-final since Vienna last October (l. to Monfils). He dropped to a 24-12 mark for the season
