DA NANG The AFC Cup remains Binh Duongs only realistic hope of silverware this season after they were defeated by Da Nang on penalties in the semi-final of the 2009 Vietnam National Cup.
South African striker Philani, who has featured in every one of the 2008 Vietnam double-winners AFC Cup this year as Binh Duong battled their way to the quarter-finals, was on target after just four minutes only for Merlo Gaston and defender Huynh Quoc Anh to turn the tie in Da Nangs favour.
With six minutes left to play Philani equalised and again kept Binh Duongs hopes of winning the cup alive when he completed his hat-trick in the dying seconds after Brazilian forward Gaston had made it 3-2 to Da Nang.
But Philani was not so fortunate in the shootout as the former Orlando Pirates forward failed to convert his penalty, as did team-mates Tran Truong Giang and Nguyen Duc Thien, while Gaston, Argentine striker Eduardo Molina and Thanh Hung were all on target for Da Nang.
The final is scheduled for August 29 when Da Nang will take on The Cong, 4-1 conquerors of Song Lam Nghe An in the other semi-final, with the cup winners booking their place in the 2010 AFC Cup.
Le Huynh Ducs side are almost certain to go into the final looking to complete the Vietnamese double with Da Nang needing just one point from their remaining four matches to win the league title.
Current league champions Binh Duong are second in the standings but 12 points adrift of Da Nang and will be focusing firmly on their AFC Cup quarter-final clash with Thailands Chonburi, the first leg of which takes place in Bangkok on September 15 before the action shifts to Vietnam on September 30.
