Hanoi, Vietnam, September 5, 2009 -- Thailand showed no mercy to less-experienced India to crush them in straight sets 25-10 25-15 25-13 in the 15th Asian Senior Women's Volleyball Championship at the Quan Ngua Competition Hall here on Saturday.
Up-and-coming Thailand, which beat four strong teams including Asian champions Japan and world No.2 USA in the recent World Grand Prix, fielded all players from their substitutions.
Led by hard-hitting Malika Kanthong and fast spiker Amporn Hyapha, Thailand opened up strongly to effortlessly win the first set 25-10.
The Thai players still fared well in the second set to lead initially 18-9 before India regrouped to bounce back heavily. Their attempts worked out well as they scored four consecutive points to narrow the gap at 13-18. Thailand decided to field experienced captain Wilavan Apinyapong and she then became the nightmare of the Indian blockers. Thailand allowed the rivals two more points to wrap up the second set 25-15.
In the third set, Thailand made short work of India by sending full-fledged players, most of them have been playing international leagues in Europe including Pleumjit Thinkaow and Onuma Sittirak. Thailand captured the set with ease 25-13 and the match.
