HANOI, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- Terrible performance in blocking the attacks and being too nervous resulted in the failure of the Chinese team to compete for Asia women volleyball champion title against Thai players, said Chinese head coach Cai Bin on Monday.
Cai summarized the reasons for the loss on early Monday morning after the final match of the Asian women volleyball championship. China lost to Thailand 1-3 on Sunday evening to come second at the championship.
Chinese players, though having the height advantage over Thai opponents, failed to identify the best timing for jumping up to block at the net when Thai players spike, said Cai Bin in an interview with Xinhua.
"The final match was the most terrible one in terms of blocking and defense among all the matches during this championship," said Cai.
Thai players were very smart in spiking and attacking, while Chinese players were inexperienced and slow in responding, said Cai.
Thailand unexpectedly beat Japan 3-1 in the semi-final of the championship and advanced into the final. The team played aggressively and superbly in the final match. They lost the first set but won the following three sets. It is the first time for Thailand to become the Asian champion in history.
Cai also said that Chinese players lost the game because they were too eager to win and became very nervous after losing the second set.
"The players cannot concentrate in the third and fourth sets," said Cai.
Cai said many times before the final match that some of the players in the Chinese teams are young and new. They have not played in the Asian volleyball championship and they are not very experienced in international competition.
When Cai was questioned about his coaching ability, he said he was trying hard to tell the players to improve blocking during the game but it did not seem to work.
"We did not reach the goal set before the game. It is a great pity," said Cai.
In next step, Cai said the team will do its best to improve defense while sharpen skills for attack.
