NIKE SPORTSWEAR CAMPAIGN INTERVIEW
Q: You're consciously thinking about the effort?
Maria Sharapova: I usually think about it when I wake up in the morning because I know what mood I'm in and what I'm feeling and whether I want to feel comfortable.* Or if I don't want to be too comfortable (laughs), that's always an option as well.* But it just depends on how you feel and what you feel like to express yourself that day.
Q: So that jacket you're wearing is an 87.
Maria Sharapova: Yes, an 87.** It is because of my birthday. I felt number one would be cool because I guess you always want to be number one.* But then I thought that was very cliche.*So, I just thought, why not my birth year? It was when I was born and that's when one more individual came on to the earth.**So there it is. Now, I have a sweatshirt with a number.* Pretty cool.
Q: How do you feel your sport influences the way you dress?* Maria Sharapova: My sport involves fashion.* So I get to express my individuality through what I wear on court.* But, I also must feel comfortable for competition.* This transmits to off court.
I have had real fun with Nike, the designers and the whole team behind my whole look.* From the dress, to my shoes, to my bag that I wear on the court, they all come together with one beautiful look and feel after a lot of discussions.* I was sitting in a meeting a year ago for the outfit that I was going to wear.* I was getting inspired by travels, what I like, what I feel comfortable to wear and what I get inspired by this whole world.* It is definitely a very inspiring journey.
I remembered we did one outfit that's full of tradition and always white.* But, we always try to bring in new materials and technologies to make it better. We work with so many different things to try to make a white outfit interesting.* That's why we did shorts one year.* We think of little creative ways to bring that surprise to people, like, "Wow, what is she doing?" People don't know what to expect, I think that's great.
Q: Do you feel that's very important for you in tennis as well to take your style there to show?
Maria Sharapova: Absolutely.**You try to draw the best attention from everyone.* So you try to set the bar higher every time and you try to surprise people and you try to bring the best to the table, the best that you can.*
The best thing about it is that not everyone is going to like your outfit.* If you think you will be loved every time, you will be frustrated.* Someone likes a T-shirt and the other one might just like a jacket.**That's just the way things are going to be.* Spicing things up is also fun.* You also have some matches where you can do something a little extra, you can add a little pizzazz.*
Q: Do you have a lot of people tell you what to do?
Maria Sharapova: I appreciate honesty very much.* I love honesty.* I love honest people.* I love when they tell me that they don't like me or they don't like this...* It helps make better product and argument to drive things interesting.* If everyone liked it, it would just be boring.* If everybody liked me, I would just become boring very soon.
I think honesty is important and I try to surround myself with those people.* I try to be very real, although sometimes it's a crazy life, I try to be a normal person and I do my best to be as normal as much as I can.
I think it's really important to stay true to yourself and to know what you came from, know where you were born, know who is around you, know how your parents raised you. I am lucky to have a very solid family tradition where my parents have been very hands on with me.
Q: How do you maintain your physical condition to play the best tennis?
Maria Sharapova: I've really realized in the last year or so, especially being injured, how physically challenging tennis is as an individual sport.* You can do all the training in the world, you can run, you can hike, you can do yoga, Pilates and all that, and I do it.* But, once I get back on the court, I am kind like a fish out of water, because there are so many things that are involved in tennis, like hand/eye coordination, movement, lateral movement, going forward, you know, little steps before you hit the ball, then hitting the ball and no matter how much strength you have, you feel so weak and you feel so out of it because it almost feels like a new surrounding even though I've done it for so many years. The main thing to keep me fit is always to play as much as you can because that's what gets me in good shape.*
Q: How do you manage to maintain your focus given all the distraction of life?
Maria Sharapova: I think a lot of it comes down to belief.* If you know that work hard on and off seasons, you wake up at 8 in the morning and your friends are going out at night, but you put those fun things just behind, at the end of the day, you know you do whatever you possibly could have done.* When you go to a tournament, you shouldn't be worried about anything and you shouldn't have any regrets.* You have to believe in yourself.*
Q: How do you keep focused at the photo shoot? Maria Sharapova: Compared to what we have to do on the tennis court, photo shoot might be considered an easier task.** I think at these events and photo shoots and being around many people, it's all about just focusing on yourself and just being comfortable.
If you're comfortable with yourself and your own body, t's so much easier.* I'm lucky that I have the experience.* I don't have to work on a product or clothing.* I am just working with my body shape.* I'm pretty comfortable with that, and no matter how many people are around me, it's actually a little similar to tennis games.* When you go inside the court, there are so many people around and talking and having opinions, but it's just you and the opponent and that's it.
Q: When you're walking out, what did you think about those shots?* I mean, do you also think about yourself differently when you see these shots?
Maria Sharapova: It's interesting.* When I see these shots I see it more of as an artistic thing, something as if I'm going into a different character and I'm someone else and I'm playing a role and even though it's me and obviously they could have got a model and do the same thing and show the hoodie the same way.** But they chose me, but for me it seems like I play this different role when I'm at the shoots.*
That's what makes it fun because then you kind of get to move around and you get to play with something.* In today's cases we did three hoodies.* It's not like you have so much to do, but we're actually relaxed and having fun with the creative team, joking with the photographer.* Surprisingly, after the work, you look at the photographs and you're like, wow, there are so many different shots and so many different postures and you got to choose from so many.
Q: So you find different personas then?* It's gratifying, isn't it?
Maria Sharapova: Yeah.* Yeah.* Definitely.* You know, it also depends on the mood, the lighting, set up, the team...* Every photographer is so different.* David was really great today.* When people are easy to work with, it's so much easier for me to be natural and be myself.
Q: Does it always surprise you or do you think people sometimes actually forget you are quite young?* You're 22.* You're still growing.
Maria Sharapova: Yeah, for tennis it seems pretty old actually.* (Laughs).* I'm 22.* The years just went by.* Sometimes, I think where I was four years ago and I try to imagine where I'll be in four years, it's like I don't even want to know. (Laughs).* I don't even want to know what I'm doing tomorrow.* But it's all good.* It's life. You all think it's going slowly, and then it all goes pretty fast.* But I look forward to every challenge and every situation.
