Djokovic saves best for London showdown.
Only those at the peak of their form are capable of beating two home hero players in as many consecutive finals, a feat Novak Djokovic has accomplished over the past fortnight. Serbia’s number one is the current tennis star to beat after he disposed of Roger Federer and Gael Monfils in the respective Basel and Paris Masters finals.
Although Novak’s former win against Federer was deemed by some tennis pundits as the Swiss giant’s bad day at the office, Djokovic has undoubtedly been on a roll, having come on top against a number of top players in the recent weeks. He is playing arguably his best tennis ever, which will definitely fuel additional motivation and confidence ahead of the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals in London next week.
- “It’s not up to me to say whether I am the hottest favourite to win the London event. However, judging by my recent performances in the past couple of weeks and the faith and conviction I’ve had when taking to the court, I’d say I stand good chances. I find reason for optimism in the fact I beat the world’s best duo – Roger Federer in Basel and Rafa Nadal in Paris – in a matter of days. These two are without a doubt two of my finest performances in 2009,” said Djokovic from Monte Carlo, where he is preparing for his appearance at London. Other top-10 players concurrent when it comes to Novak’s fine form.
- “At times he seems like a flawless robot out there. I don’t know what kind of form the rest of the guys are in, but Novak seems the most prepared for the London tournament,” said the defeated Paris finalist, Gael Monfils.
The leader of the ATP rankings, Roger Federer, is aware what it will take to claim the trophy at the last ATP event of the season.
- “I think it hasn’t happened for a long time that so many players were in contention to take the prestigious trophy. If anyone stands out in terms of form, that would be Djokovic. In my opinion, if I intend to be at his level, I will need to raise my game.”
Apart from the handsome prize money, the ATP World Tour Finals might introduce shifts in the ATP standings. According to the confusing ATP regulations when it comes to rankings, Djokovic is still at position number three, with still a glimmer of hope he might still improve on his position if some other elements fall into place.
Federer tops the lot with 10,150 points, challenged by Nadal at 9,205 points. In order for Djokovic (7,910) to ascend up the rankings, he will need to win the London event, with Nadal failing to get anything more than a single win in the tournament. As chances of something like that happening are objectively grim, Novak could still hope for an improved position after the London event, one that would get him a notch closer to the leading duo of Federer and Nadal. That would create a perfect prelude to the January’s Australian Open grand slam.
Meanwhile, Djokovic is scheduled to appear in an exhibition match in Banja Luka against Viktor Troicki on 30 November, as published on Djokovic’s official web page.
