Mark Hughes Favourite For Bolton Job 'Sparky' set for quick return to management? Dec 31, 2009 4:16:18 AM
Mark Hughes, recently relieved of his managerial responsibilities at Manchester City, is the bookies' favorite to succeed Gary Megson at troubled outfit Bolton Wanderers, according to the Belfast Telegraph.
Megson's demise at the Trotters has long been speculated, with eccentric Italian Walter Zenga linked with the manager's position at Bolton at the start of the month.
Since the 50-year-old's formal departure, though, former Wigan Athletic boss Paul Jewell, Sir Alex Ferguson's son Darren - who oversaw back-to-back promotions with lower league outfit Peterborough, ex Thailand head coach Peter Reid, and Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer have all emerged as likely candidates.
Burnley boss Owen Coyle was the fans' immediate favorite, primarily due to his prior involvement with the club in the early 1990's when, for two seasons, he was on the books of the club as a striker.
However, the acclaimed Clarets coach, who has astounded his Premier League critics by helping unfancied Burnley to 20 points after 20 games, has allegedly distanced himself from the role, which has left Bolton to target either Darren Ferguson (the Telegraph), or Hughes. Megson, meanwhile, may not be without employment for long, as he will, according to reports, go head to head with Nigel Worthington for the vacant role at Sheffield Wednesday.
