Arsenal Transfer Prospects: Six Players Arsene Wenger Should Sell
As fans and critic contemplate who Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, should be signing to replace the likely departing Cesc Fabregas, and who the Frenchman's next keeping sensation will be, many have neglected the tough job of who Wenger will look to sell.
After what can be said as a disappointing season in 2009/2010, most of the Arsenal community are demanding changes to be implemented to ensure silverware is secured. Arsenal constant keeping havocs and the lack of depth in the defence, were outstanding problems last season and many expect Wenger to buy—but will he sell?
1. Mikaël Silvestre: £1-3 million ---***
The surprise 2008 summer signing endured a horrendous campaign with the Gunners, proving he is no longer capable of performing with the Gunners. The lacklustre defender lack of game time in the early half of the season, his ageing body and his lack of speed and strength, were all contributing factors in the Frenchman's downfall.
Despite his work ethic and constant enthusiasm, the 32-year-old struggles to cope with the pace and physicality of the strong forwards the Premier League boast. With Wenger likely to sign a quality centre half in the Summer transfer window, and the promising youngsters Harvard Nodtveit, Kyle Bartley and Luke Ayling all returning from successful loan stints, Silvestre evidently is no longer required at Arsenal.
Furthermore, clubs are expressing interest in the veteran defender and with Arsenal able to attract a decent fund the transfer could benefit all.
2. Eduardo Da Silva: £5-12 million
A sad option, but after Eduardo's horrific injury in February 2008, the Croatian striker has struggled in the English game. The Croatian international was in good form before suffering a broken left fibula and dislocation of his ankle after an ugly challenge by Birmingham's Martin Taylor.
2009/2010 saw a fully fit Eduardo performing for the Gunners. For most of the time the 27-year-old graced turf, he was disappointing and frail, wasting strong opportunities and lacking in courage.
However, Wenger has stated that Eduardo is part of the team's future. But if an offer comes along with a handy sum, Wenger may sell Eduardo Da Silva.
3. Philippe Senderos: £5-12 million ---***
Since returning from a loan spell with Italian giants AC Milan, Philippe Senderos has found himself out of favour under Wenger's guidance. After making a mere two appearances before January, Senderos was sent on loan to Everton were injury hampered his playing time playing a further two games.
Its unclear if Wenger and Senderos had an argument or if the imposing Swiss is a lacklustre performer at training but it's highly likely Wenger will looked to offload his Swiss centre half and track down a new replacement.
4. William Gallas: Free Agent
The Frenchman is currently off contract at the Gunners and although Wenger is seeking a new deal for the former Chelsea defender, it is unlikely he will oblige. After the recent news that Gallas is the black sheep of the Arsenal dressing room and some players do not even communicate with him, Gallas may be eager to depart the Emirates.
Despite having a strong campaign before injury kicked in, and forming a formidable partnership with new defender Thomas Vermaelen, it is growing increasingly likely the 32-year-old will depart.
5. Manuel Almunia: £1-5 million
The Arsenal fans least liked player by a country mile. The Spanish keeper has struggled since his reign as first choice keeper. Almunia has the tendency to make vital errors in big games and many feel his mistakes cost Arsenal dearly. Although he is a leader and a gallant performer, occasionally pulling off magnificent moments of brilliance, few people wish to see Manuel Almunia remain the dominant keeper.
Selling does look like an option but Wenger may opt to demote the 32-year-old and sign a world class keeper, time will tell.
6. Kerrea Gilbert: £800,000 to 4 million
The once promising Arsenal youth has spent the last four seasons away on loan at various places in England. Wenger seems unsure, or has simply forgotten about the Hammersmith born right back. After progressing through the youth ranks and then standing on the fringe of consistent first team selection in 2005/2006, Gilbert was sent on loan and has played three times since for the Gunners.
Undoubtedly, you would expect the Englishman to leave the Emirates and make his trade in the Championship.
