Q: Can you give us a personal account of what you experienced this World Cup?
A: The feelings from the Swiss game on were very good. We always felt that we could do something grand. You always go to the World Cup with the goal of winning, but this time, we really felt as if that were an option. We could do it, even though we lost the first game against Switzerland. The three or four days after that until the Honduras game were bad, but the two hours before the Chilean game were the two worst pre-game hours of my life.
Q: Why?
A: It was the most difficult game. Even though we were superior to Chile, we were walking on a tightrope. An expulsion, a penalty, a day of bad luck where a goal is scored against you off a rebound and you arent able to score
all these could get us sent back to Spain in the group stage. That would have been the worst news for this country, in terms of football.
Q: Did everyone else feel the same tension that day?
A: Yes, but what I liked most was that as soon as the game started, you didnt see any of it. Not even in the warm-up.
Q: What did you talk about in the locker room in a moment like that one?
A: Nothing. There was silence. Everyone was concentrating on the game. Before the games, everyone closes themselves off. The trip from the hotel to the stadium
Ive never been so nervous in my life.
Q: You survived that game, and after that, which game did you like the most?
A: The one against Portugal. Each time that I got the ball and faced the rival, I felt rapid, that I could go from side to side and the defense wouldnt be able to keep up with me.
Q: Your father is your biggest critic. Did he call you after each game?
A: Yes, of course, always. He criticized me for the penalty I missed.
Q: What did he say?
A: He didnt like the fact that I didnt take the penalty against Paraguay. He thought that I didnt want to take it because I had missed the previous one. I explained to him that Xabi wanted to take it, and that I let him take it out of respect.
Q: Were you all more impermeable to the things that were being said around you?
A: Yes. The media of the other countries kept trying to destabilize us. They saw Spain as a clear candidate for the title. The míster supported us, such as when he said that he would like to be Sergio Busquets. That was after the Swiss game, when he was receiving a lot of criticism. In the end, the coach made Sergio a key player in the system.
Q: You all also had to support Iker for the criticism he received
A: Iker is a reference, and the most important player for all of us. Whenever there is a problem, its him that supports us. But hes fighting a thousand battles and although we all individually tried to help him out, he could handle it himself, he didnt need us.
Q: Youve lived through two celebrations, one for the Eurocopa and one for the World Cup. How were they different?
A: In terms of the people. The day of the one for the Eurocopa, we were surprised, but the World Cup surpassed it. The route was longer, and each street we went down was absolutely full of people. It was unexpected and overwhelming.
Q: Your wife Patricia knows a lot about football.
A: She likes it. Its important, but not vital, for someone whos always watching football because it ends up helping you. She played football until she was 17. She doesnt watch all the games, but she likes it. She played as a defender. I didnt see her play a lot, but from what shes told me, she was good.
Q: And what did she tell you after the goal you scored against Chile?
A: The same as the rest of the world, she asked me why I shot the ball there, and why with my left foot. But it was a matter of some tenths of a second, and you dont think about it. After watching it on TV, I stopped to think about it, but I still dont know how to explain why I decided to do that.
Q: The celebration against Chile was also spontaneous?
A: Yes, as you watch the ball to see if it goes in, you keep moving back, back until its a goal.
Q: Was the game against the Netherlands the longest of your life?
A: Yes. It wasnt the most distressing, because it was beautiful. A lot of people said that we would enjoy the final because we had never gotten that far, but we only enjoyed it once the referee blew the whistle.
Q: And the reaction of the families?
A: Incredible. I saw them because they were close by. When I went up to them, all of them were crying.
Q: Did you cry?
A: Everyone cried a little inside the locker room. I got very emotional upon seeing Iker cry from Iniestas goal until the end of the game. He didnt stop. Pepe Reina was on the sideline trying to console him. He even went near the goal to talk to him. And Capdevila was crying like a baby.
