The lights were cut and a roar went up around Eastlands as if two heavyweight boxers were making their entrance for the fight of the century.
The atmosphere was crackling with expectation as Manchester City fans sensed their chance to signal a changing of the guard with a knockdown punch on their bitter rivals.
But what a disappointment. It was powderpuff, barely a jab landed in a game neither side wanted to lose, but nor did they want to win.
The stage had been set for a classic derby in the Manchester chill.
The stadium was full 15 minutes before kick-off, a rarity in modern Premier League football. Home fans held their sky blue and white scarves aloft. City captain Carlos Tevez, once a United player, pumped his fist as he pumped up the crowd.
To a man, every City supporter in the ground thought their side was going to win, thought the speed, guile and cutting edge of David Silva and Carlos Tevez would blow away their declining neighbours.
Last year, Sir Alex Ferguson described City as United's 'noisy neighbours' and they lived up to his billing as they made an almighty din in the opening stages.
'We're not scared of you' they sang, and maybe for the first time in years they meant it. In the first 10 minutes they cheered the award of a throw-in as they might a goal on another night.
But how that enthusiasm faded. The atmosphere wilted as the game painfully progressed closer and closer to a goalless draw that, in hindsight, looked inevitable from the first minute.
The most hyped game of the season so far and probably the least exciting of the season. No excitement, no flashpoints, no Wayne Rooney. It was the friendliest derby you could (not) wish to see.

When Yaya Toure is Manchester City's most advanced midfielder, you know the chances of a goalfest are slim, but the hosts were so defensive it was almost painful.
This was not the type of football they signed up for when they signed up for season tickets in their thousands, it is not the way the club's billionaire owners envisaged the side playing as they search for a title.
And with Roberto Mancini playing such negative tactics, City will have to wait to win the Premier League because they lack the attacking ambition needed of champions.
The whole-hearted support before kick-off and during the early stages dwindled with the game. During the first-half it manifested in moans and groans as City toiled in their attempts to create goalscoring chances.
By the midway point in the second-half, those who were still awake were screaming with frustration as they watched two sides lined up against each other but moving about as often as chess pieces.
Mancini, true to his Italian roots, made no attempt to break the stalemate unless you count bringing on Emmanuel Adebayor for Carlos Tevez in the fourth and final minute of added time.
By then, much of the crowd had left, after Mancini ignored their desperate pleas to get up-and-at-'em, to give it a go and see what might happen.
The chants had long faded and the atmosphere was reduced more to individual hecklers.
"Come on Roberto, sort it out," shouted one supporter next to the press box. "Come on City, what the hell are you doing?" boomed another.
Attack, attack, attack is a refrain often used by the United fans. Mancini's mantra is defend, defend, defend.
It was not the result but the nature of the performance that frustrated the City supporters.
Everyone assumes Mancini's job is safe but if fans are on his back during a derby, if he buys these stellar forwards but uses them as auxiliary midfielders, questions will soon be asked as to whether the expectant supporters will be able to put up with this drab football.
At the moment City have all the tools to be heavyweight punchers but they are too scared to throw, never mind land their punches.
