Tevez 'relaxed' after meeting with Mancini
December 18, 2010 Carlos Tevez will play against Everton Carlos Tevez was said to be relaxed after his much publicised 'showdown' meeting with Roberto Mancini on Friday.
An insider told ESPNsoccernet that Tevez's mood was "calm" after Mancini revealed that he wants him to return to the team for Monday's home game against Everton.
Tevez handed in a transfer request last week, which was immediately rejected, claiming that his relationship with certain individuals at the club was broken beyond repair. That led to speculation that Tevez could be sold off in the January transfer window - with Real Madrid showing interest - or that he might retire completely from football and return home to Argentina.
Instead, City intend to make Tevez honour his contract, which runs until the summer of 2014, and there is no sign of the Argentina striker quitting the game - something which he has hinted at several times this year. As yet, there has been no suggestion that Mancini plans to strip Tevez of the captaincy, although that remains a possibility if the situation cannot be resolved. Much will depend on Tevez thinking over his future this weekend.
Tevez has made it clear that money is not the motivating force, having rejected :-)-off bonus payment of £5 million to stay for this season alone. But a world record deal, and contract extension to go with it, might make him feel a touch more inclined to resolve his outstanding issues.
Tevez is frustrated because he is not playing Champions League football, but City could offer that next season - and Mancini wants to achieve that breakthrough with his top goalscorer's help. Mancini's desire is to focus on the games and the prizes within the team's sights, and to emphasise to Tevez his importance to the team and the possibilities of success this season.
The insider told ESPNsoccernet: "There hasn't been a detailed discussion yet about the implications of the meeting with Carlos Tevez and Roberto Mancini, so everything for the moment is speculation, but the player's attitude was one of calm."
