Thai football fans threaten by anonymous armed men

A  group of Thai supporters was threatened by 7 anonymous men who were  reportedly with pocket guns. During the Pre-Olympic match between  Thailand and Palestine took place on February 23, 2011 at Supachalasai  National Stadium in Bangkok

The Thai fans have, since January  2011, been campaigning to oust the Football Association of Thailand  (FAT)’s President Worawi Makudi from his post. The fans called for the  campaign after series of disappointed performance of the Thai national  teams, eliminated from several regional and Southeast Asian competitions  including the SEA Games, Asian Cup qualifiers, and the AFF Suzuki Cup.  The Thai teams loss to several Southeast Asia level opponents such as  Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia. This includes the draw  against Laos for the first time in 45 years history. The fans say the  prolonged failure is due to mismanagement of the FAT.

On January  9, 2011, a group of 500 football fans who called themselves, “Khon Rak  Ball Thai” (Thai Football Lovers) demonstrated before the Channel3 TV  station to submit their complaint to Thailand’s most influence TV  program “Rueng Lao Chao Nee” (The Morning Tale). One week after, around  1,000 fans protested again in front of the FAT office in the compound of  Supachalasai National Stadium. Mr. Worawi refused to resign saying the  poor performance of the national teams had nothing to do with him.

These  demonstrations were followed by several in-stadium protests during the  local matches. The fans shouted “Worawi Gets Out!” during the Royal Kor  final competition between Muang Thong United and Chonburi FC. The fans  communicated via social networking media including facebook, and other  websites dedicated for Thai football.

A fan posted in websites such as www.cheerthai.com, www.thailandsusu.com, and www.pantip.com narrating the incidents occurred during the official match between  Thailand and Palestine. The topics gained hundreds of comments.  Witnesses confirmed of the incident.

“About 4-5 scary-looking men  looked at us with the evil eyes. One guy in a black jacket escorted one  of us and said like threatening “if you guys don’t make it more polite,  watch yourself or get wounded,” a fan posted in the mentioned websites.  Some comment mentioned that about 7 men were seen together after the  threatening.

A fan mentioned that he reported it to the match  security but was replied “watch yourself, the guy has a gun.” The fan  said even the security dared not to search the suspects.

Photos of the suspects, comments, and the atmosphere were posted in the websites including those in the links below.
