NEW BOYS IN THE NEW CHELSEA MAG
Posted on: Thu 03 Mar 2011
Fernando Torres and David Luiz are showcased in the April edition of Chelsea magazine, out today.
The pair arrived at Stamford Bridge on transfer deadline day at the end of January and have quickly set about making themselves at home, as they have explained to the club's official in-house magazine. Torres, who signed moments earlier than his Brazilian team-mate, explains the sensation of walking into a dressing room awash with medals for the first time.
'It was similar to starting at school,' he says. 'You are always, not worried, but a bit shy when you arrive on the first day and you want to do many things - go here, go there, train well, meet everyone. But here the atmosphere was very good, they have made it very easy for me.'
The focus with fans is always on the football and the results players are producing on the pitch, but away from the game there are the same anxieties mere mortals must cope with when making a big move.
'It's very important to find a house or an apartment and bring my family to live here with me now,' says the Spaniard. 'It's tough in the beginning when you are in a hotel and then you just go to the training ground. You haven't got a car or anything - you cannot live a normal life - so, obviously, it's different to what you're used to. Hopefully, I can find somewhere as soon as possible and I can start living here.' Of course Torres is no stranger to silverware, on the international stage he boasts both European and World titles, but he is no less hungry to start accumulating medals at club level too.
'When you are 40 or 50 and you can look back, the main thing will be, "What did you do as a footballer?" When people are talking about trophies and moments, you want to be in that picture - you want to achieve everything you can.
'I'm lucky to have won two major championships with Spain and now I want to do the same in club football.'
Chelsea fans knew all too well what Torres could do, his goals for Liverpool against us a staple of our visits to Anfield down the years, but David Luiz remained a relative unknown on these shores until he burst onto the scene at Fulham just over a fortnight ago, and then smashed home the equaliser against Manchester United on Tuesday. Not that the down-to-earth 23-year-old minds, of course. 'I am very privileged to have left a great club like Benfica to join another great club like Chelsea, where I hope I can help them win many trophies,' says the 6ft 2in defender, 'but I think it's important to stay grounded and I would always be the same person, no matter who I was playing for.
'I have to be humble and modest because we can't achieve things on our own in life. I try to make every effort I can to make the most of all the effort people have invested in me. 'When I was a little boy, I dreamed of this success and this is why I try to stay the same as I have always been.'
It was as a youngster in Brazil that David Luiz learned the game from his father who had also been a budding talent in their homeland before giving up the game in the interests of family life. 'I remember my daily training sessions with my dad when he came home from work,' he reveals. 'He would take me to a field, like a soil field without any grass, and we would play together and practice my left and right foot, all that stuff. Then, I was already living my dream and I could really believe that I would become a good footballer.
'My dad is a great idol to me as a person, a friend and a player - in any capacity. He is my mirror in life. He played as a No10 and, until I was 16, I also used to play in that position. I used to play more forward but I moved back.
'I grew up in a city in Brazil that wasn't very wealthy but my parents always ensured that me and my older sister had everything we needed. We played together a lot and I just loved playing football.' That innocence is evident in David Luiz's all-action style, and it seems the future is looking very bright indeed.
Elsewhere in this month's Chelsea, Michael Essien takes a look at his Firsts and Lasts, watch out for his description of his first pair of football boots, and a trip down Memory Lane with Hilario in his Photo Album, while One Of Us is DJ, VJ and massive Chelsea fan, Trevor Nelson.
