BNP PARIBAS OPEN 2011 Djokovic Rolls Past Gulbis; Berdych Cruises Indian Wells, U.S.A. by Staff 15.03.2011
Novak Djokovic extended his winning streak to 16 matches after a crushing 6-0, 6-1 win over Ernests Gulbis Tuesday to reach the fourth round of the BNP Paribas Open.
The World No. 3 found himself triple break point down to start his third-round match and saved two more break points in the fifth game, but that was the only pressure he would face en route to his 14th straight victory of 2011.
The 2008 Indian Wells champion, who also spent less than an hour on court in his opening win against Andrey Golubev on Sunday, closed out the 54-minute victory with consecutive aces.
“He’s unpredictable; he has a very strong serve and he has a powerful groundstroke, but if he's not patient and not hitting the right balls like today, he can he can miss a lot,” said Djokovic. “That’s what happened. I was just trying to keep the ball in the court, not doing too much, just returning a lot and making him play an extra shot and changing the pace. He was not feeling comfortable, obviously.”
It marked Djokovic’s most lopsided win since 2009 at Basel, when he recorded the double bagel against Czech Jan Hernych.
The 23-year-old Serbian is chasing his third title of the 2011 ATP World Tour season after winning the Australian Open and Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.
“I cannot ask for a better start of the year,” said Djokovic. “I’m just building up on that confidence and continuing to play well, and feeling up from that run that I had in the Davis Cup final. I have been playing great tennis, the best tennis of my life. I’m just trying to play better and better each match, and then maintain a very consistent level of performance.”
Djokovic will take a 7-1 head-to-head record into his next match against Davis Cup teammate Viktor Troicki, who took 66 minutes to dismiss Frenchman Michael Llodra 6-3, 6-3. Djokovic and Troicki are currently through to the quarter-finals in the doubles draw.
World No. 7 Tomas Berdych also made smooth progress in early action Tuesday, dismissing Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci 6-3, 6-2 in one hour and 14 minutes.
Berdych will attempt to reach the Indian Wells quarter-finals for a second straight year when he plays 12th-seeded Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka, a 7-5, 6-3 winner over No. 17 seed Marin Cilic of Croatia.
Wawrinka has reached the quarter-finals or better in each of his main draw appearances this year, highlighted by the title win at the season opener in Chennai. His last two losses in Indian Wells have come against Djokovic, in the 2008 quarter-finals and the 2009 fourth round.
