Some 700m owed to the Spanish tax man by Spain's football clubs, not to mention debts to footballers, Social Security, suppliers, iffy agent types and local councils means that money is very tight these days in la Liga. This is why even a million quid splurged on a footballer is a hefty investment for a Primera club during Spain's never-ending economic crisis. Here's a list of those teams who are sitting pretty on their purchases over the summer and those who have well and truly peed their money up the wall.
Five Of The Best
Mesut ึzil, Real Madrid, £15m
The German forward has taken to la Liga like Harry Redknapp to a microphone with 10 assists and six league goals for Madrid. Costing £4m less than James Milner, ึzil has managed to recreate his Werder Bremen and World Cup form with delightful dances through opposition defences and selfless team-work. The German international has been touted by a gabbling Madrid press as a future Ballon d'Or candidate. If the footballer reportedly nicknamed 'Nemo' by his Madrid team-mates because of his unfortunate similarity to the cartoon fish keeps up this form in the future, their excitement is by no means exaggerated.
Adriano, Barcelona, £8.3m
The megabucks signings of David Villa and Javier Mascherano over the summer threw a bit of a shadow over the opportunistic purchase of the Brazilian utility man from Sevilla. Adriano has all the technique required in his footballing wardrobe to fit into Bar็a's fancy pants style as well as the ability to play in both fullback positions and even in midfield. With another long campaign on the cards for a club with one of the smallest squads in the division, Adriano's signing is looking very astute indeed.
Ivan Rakitic, £2.2m, Sevilla
Sevilla's season was well and truly sunk at the beginning of January. It was a team lying on its back, wiggling its legs in the air having skidded towards a sad end to a glorious era. But after a series of signing duds, it seems that the club's sporting director Monchi, has rediscovered his mojo with the purchase of central midfielder Rakitic from Schalke. The Croatian has added a sense of dynamism and - to be all Pseud's Corner for a moment - rebirth to Sevilla's midfield with his set-pieces, work rate and three goals from just eight games.
Felipe Caicedo, Loan, Levante
With Manchester City's fairly expensive forwards struggling for strikes, it's worth noting that at least one front man on their books is banging in the goals. The problem is that Felipe Caicedo is doing it in Spain in a loan spell at Levante. The Ecuadorian is having a wonderful campaign by single-handedly saving the season of a club that were relegation fodder with eleven goals - goals that see Levante just a couple of victories from safety.
Jonathan De Guzmแn, Free, Mallorca
This column had assigned one la Primera's three relegation spots to Mallorca at the beginning of the season, with the club in administration and forced to shed its best players once again. But that was before it got an eyeful of Jonathan De Guzman in action - a box-to-box, set-piece taking, tireless playmaker who joined from Feyenoord on a free transfer looking to rebuild a promising career that was rocked back on its heels with injury.
And Five Of The Worst
Pedro Le๓n, Real Madrid, £8m
A lesson here in what happens if players are signed without the approval of Jos้ Mourinho. The midfielder was brought in from Getafe by Jorge Valdano after an outstanding season where he was the league's top assist-maker with cross after cross thrown in from the right hand side. Unfortunately the Madrid manager seems to have taken an instant dislike to the 24-year-old from the off. That animosity was apparent when the topic of the wide-man's absence caused Mourinho to storm out of a Champions League press conference against Auxerre in the biggest of huffs.
"You're all talking about Pedro Le๓n as if he were Zidane or Maradona...it was just a couple of days ago that he was playing for Getafe," fumed the Special One on a player who has made just five substitute appearances in la Liga this season.
Filipe Luis, Atl้tico Madrid, £10m
There's something very strange about Atl้tico Madrid that whenever perfectly decent defenders are signed by Spain's comedy club they immediately turn to hopeless, quivering mush robbed of all confidence. Filipe Luis is a case in point. The former Deportivo flying full-back was a target for Barcelona a year ago. That move didn't go through, instead the Brazilian ended up at the Vicente Calder๓n where he has started just 16 league games and has barely had the chance to bomb forward, required instead to participate in Atl้tico's usual defensive carnage at the back.
Juanfran, Atl้tico Madrid, £3.7m
Another example of Atl้tico's muddled thinking. Simao was allowed to go on a free over the winter window to Besiktas with the club unable to agree terms on a new contract with the winger. Instead, the money which could have been paid to keep the fairly important Portuguese midfielder sweet was blown on Juanfran - a wholly unremarkable footballer who had spent five seasons running up blind alleys for Osasuna. Atl้tico boss, Quique Sแnchez Flores, would concur having only given Juanfran the single start since the former Real Madrid man's arrival in January.
Sebastiแn Fernแndez, Mแlaga, £3.1m
Things haven't exactly worked out for the Uruguayan striker brought in by Mแlaga over the summer with the aim of moving the club into the European places. Just three goals in 22 appearances for the former Banfield man who is Sevilla's record signing has helped contribute to a wholly rotten season for Mแlaga, that has seen the southern side fighting relegation for much of the campaign.
Alexis, Sevilla, £4.4m
To date, the central defender's transfer fees between Mแlaga, Getafe, Valencia and Sevilla have totaled around £10m and it is still baffling to see why Sevilla contributed to that ridiculous sum over the summer with another hefty fee. Alexis is only ever notable in his performances by the mistakes he makes and the Michael Bolton hairdo the defender sports.
